Appalling, do not recommend
Paid for a double room and was given a single room, this was no bother as the lady at reception apologised and put me into a double room. Got into my double room and it was filthy, it was late, I had a long day and wanted to crash. Instead I went out for the whole evening until 10pm so I would not have to sit in a filthy room, and on my return I could go to sleep and leave first thing in the morning. I pulled my bed covers back to get in bed and it was covered in blood stains, big patches of blood all over the sheets and duvet. I threw the bedding on the floor and slept in my coat for the night. Absolutely disgusting, never again.
Nobody at the desk when we arrived and hotel locked. Lady serving breakfast cried the entire service. Also breakfast is only 7.00-08.30 which should have been stated on booking because I ended up paying for breakfast I couldn’t have as I was unable to get up on time- 4 breakfasts paid but only 2 taken. Also cleaning lady thought it was appropriate to knock on the door and ask when I was leaving before check out time and demanded my room key. Could do with some lessons on manners and etiquette.
1 night stay
Pleasant enough for what i needed. Room was spacious, shower was hot, amenities where available.
Clean and good value
Very good value, breakfast was good, room was clean and functional. Only 10 minute walk into newport centre
Expensive for a tiny room.
I booked a room in this hotel after reading the many 10/10 reviews and looking at the photos of the rooms. I now question the authenticity of those reviews. First of all this hotel is more a private house BnB than a hotel. It is situated not far from the city centre but the area is really rather shabby. There is renovation work going on so I couldn't find the front door at first. Not a big issue but irritating. I booked a single room, paying over £55 for a shoebox! Size probably 8'x6'. Yes there was a single bed, desk, chair and tiny wardrobe but they filled my tiny room. The ensuite was nearly as big as my room. On the plus side, it looked clean enough. Towels were provided but they were also small and quite thin. The bed was ok but needed a new mattress. The room was quite warm even with the radiator off, luckily there was a bit of a draught from the window which helped. Breakfast times were rather early, from 07.00-08.30 in a very plain dining room with noise from the kitchen. There was some fruit, yogurts and wrapped pain de chocolat though not freshly baked. Reasonable choice of hot food though no proper bacon or sausages. I had an omelette which was freshly cooked which was lacking in seasoning but adequate. When i looked at other budget hotels in the area, i was very disappointed that i booked the Gateway. This tiny room was completely overpriced at £55. The local lbis was £41 for a decent sized room. So i recommend reducing single room prices.
All in all another good stay
On arrival to the hotel, we had to wait for a little while before the owner opened the door next door and asked us to check in there. No signage to indicate this was the case. The room looked like it was recently added in a new block at the back of the main building. The room itself was clean enough but the towels were a bit shabby and had a fews holes in a couple of them. Breakfast was nice enough.
Good for a one night stay, cleanliness could be better ie toilet seat broken off.
I could only get breakfast up to 8.30, very poor! Keypad at entry did not work, lucky I got back before the reception closed.
Over night stay
It was a perfect room for night. Clean and comfy
A great no fuss place to stay, run by a friendly family team.
Clean and well maintained rooms. Fresh linen, towels and toiletries provided. Happy with the stay
Can see property being updated but still managed to keep it clean ans tidy.
It was an unpromising start as reception was closed when I arrived at 3pm to check in. There was a phone number to ring. The lady seemed surprised that it was 3 o'clock but said she would come. I had to wait outside for 15 minutes, which was a little irritating, however once checked in, I was very pleased with the room. An unexpected upgrade to a twin room from the single room booked. And it was a nice room, seemed newly refurbished, tea coffee biscuits comfortable bed. I was also pleased with the easy free on site parking.
Lovely to be allowed my expensive Ebike Into my room
Perfect, clean room. Comfortable bed.
It was clean
Madenhoonest booking mmistaje, ctriedcto rectify but got brush off!
Very clean hotel with very pleasant staff.
Lovely hotel. The only downfall was there was no air conditioning so we had to have the window open and then was really noisy with traffic and trains going by. Staff were very pleasant and helpful and a lovely breakfast before we left
Secure, hospitble, halal breakfast
Free lit up parking on site, halal feshly made breakfast to your order, hot power shower. Blinds could have been blackout but otherwise welcoming service for a reasonable price. Will stay again.
Was great. Met our needs. Was clean and quiet and only a ten minute walk away from the town.
Friendly staff
It felt like home, exclusive and peaceful.
Lovely hotel. Friendly staff thank you x
Would stay again
Clean and tidy with a good breakfast to start the day off. Quiet location and a comfortable night's sleep. Space enough, with a bit of moving around,to get the car parked. Parking on the street around the corner if the car park is full. Having some minor decoration and modernisation work done but didn't cause us any issues at all.
Handy location to town
It was clean and comfortable and in a good location for my needs
Gateway
Hotel rooms have been re done but still I few little bits that just need finishing, no curtains only blinds that let light in from street lights n sun in morning. Could do with a fan just to keep it cooler instead of having to have windows wide open on a main road. We left at 7.30 and had to leave key n card on side of door frame as no key box and no staff around. We would come back, just a few little things to improve.
Wonderful Room
I had booked the hotel on the day, as my previous booking had gone bankrupt and not told me. The hotel was good... it was just a shame our neighbour downstairs set off the fire alarm at 5:20.
Good
To a good standard, does what it says on the tin
Extremely good value very clean rooms Noisy you can hear people walking around abit Location is okay.
A comfortable stay in general.
Will definitely stay there again, good value for money
Convenient location, hotel could do with some refu
Good Parking and location very walkable to city centre and transport. Room and hotel looks very tired but clean, room smelt stale, bed sheet was torn, shouldn’t have been used on the bed
Not the best
Breakfast times poor, parking is aweful. Dirty towels. Very noisy and disturbed sleep due to location next to the road.
i really liked it
review
The room was very small, at the main road, the bed and , noisy room, smelly. the mattress are very uncomfortable.
Plenty of take aways availabke and a wetherspoons 10 mins walk away. Good location and good parking
A Mixed Bag
The reviews of the hotel stated that a refurbishment has been done but I’m not sure that the state of the hotel shows it has been completed. First had to wait for 10 mins for someone to answer the door to let us in despite being told we could check in from 3pm and it was 3.40. The room had brand new fitted and very nice furniture (bedside drawers, wardrobe, desk etc) but these were attached to a wall with huge gaps in the plaster, window that didn’t keep any noise out, blinds that didn’t keep the sun out and a bath room that had so much mildew on the door frame, plug hole and rusted shaver plug that I don’t think it has ever been sprayed with anything let alone refurbished. The dining room was awful- lights hanging out, a constant beeping which is probably from the fact the smoke detector is hanging out the ceiling and a smell that is mixed between cabbage and fish. The 2 members of staff we encountered were very polite and the breakfast we had was freshly cooked and tasty. The “selection of pastries and juices” is a bit of a stretch though (a jug of orange juice and pre packed chocolate brioche from Lidl does not constitute a selection). The location was easy to find and plenty of parking out front. Not in the nicest part of Newport but very easy walk to town and local pub. I think the hotel could be lovely but until the refurbishment is finished they either need to close or drastically reduce the prices.
Recently refurbished property and to a very high standard, great value and nice breakfast.
Great value for money
We got at hotel 3pm which was the check-in time kept us waiting outside for 30 minutes then when we got in kept us waiting another 15 minutes before we had keys to get in room then to top it all off shower was leaking and only had hand towels in room no bath towels will never use hotel again
Lights on all night outside of the room
Quite a soothing experience
Fantastic value for money
Fantastic value for money - very nice clean, good sized room with plenty of hot drinks available (and biscuits!). Good sized modernised bathroom. Very polite and friendly staff, and a very good breakfast included in the price! We would definitely stay here again.
Two nights in December 23
Lovely people. Very clean. Great value.
Ample parking. Friendly staff. Modern room. Clean. Nice TV . Generous tea and coffee. Comfortable bed. Good lighting. Plenty of storage. Bathroom was clean, water hot. Towels could have been bigger. Breakfast tasty, hot and made to order. Excellent coffee.
Very happy with this hotel. Room was spotlessly clean with a modern bathroom and shower. Comfortable bed as well. Would definitely recommend.
Budget and Tired could do better
The reception check in was awful had to ring a mobile number wait for someone to arrive even at 15.15 afternoon. Also bathroom window did not close so totally freezing having a shower with window open in nov .Also hallway smells and grubby looking with a open window in nov .my experience was durable for one night .
Can you both please update the contact number for this hotel as it led to a bad check in experience
The receptionist was a nice and helpful
Ordered a twin room but was put in a double room. Quickly corrected but not an ideal start. The young lady who was serving breakfast was very polite & helpful but wasn't to offer a vegetarian option for the cooked breakfast. Breakfast is great, if you like meat. Stayed here a year ago and service has dropped which is a shame as the room & location was perfect.
Newport Stay
Room was on 3 floor three flights of stairs bit much for a OAP. Cigarette burn in sheet and broken Shower heat attachment mean you need to hold head to wash. Wifi was good and worked well, Breakfast was in different building had to got outside (Could get wet if raining) to other building, Breakfast was OK English or cereal or apples, fruit juices tea or coffee. Reasonably priced with parking. walking distance to town and food.
Cheap and cheerful stay! Very basic room but great if all you need is a tidy room for the night. Would stay again.
Bit basic, but acceptable. Room bit small. More B&B than hotel?
Clean and tidy room with good supply of tea/coffee etc
A bit dated but clean!
The main areas are a bit dated but the room was modern, clean and comfortable. It's on a main road so a bit noisy at night. Short walk to the centre where there are restaurants , etc.
Awful service, great room
We arrived mid afternoon to a sign on the door saying back in 10 minutes. After around 15 minutes, a woman unlocked the door and walked away. I assumed this was another guest initially as there was no hello, greeting or welcome. The woman was continually coughing, spluttering and wiping her nose with a tissue. We followed her into the reception area where she sat down and in silence just handed me a sheet to fill out, asked my reservation code and this was followed by more silence. It felt like me and my friend was an inconvenience. She also took a phone call during this which I assume was for help on how to use the system. After another long silence she got the keycard which she then WIPED with the tissue she’d been using to blow her nose! Told us where to stay which was kind of complicated, ‘three doors down, room 9 floor 2’ it was quite hard to hear her as she was really quiet. She didn’t tell us where our included breakfast would be or when, when to check out, or any additional information. It turns out the place we were staying was four doors down and the room itself was brilliant and clean. The next morning we left at 11.30 and there was no information on where to put the keycard to our room. The reception was also closed and as we were in a rush, we had to leave it under the mat of the reception door. Overall it was a great stay and we slept well, but something needs to be done about service as we also missed out on breakfast that we paid for.
worst hotel
On arrival i made our beds up as the matress topper was under the bed torn bed sheets, dirty walls and skirting, used bathroom matt, drilling and banging building work going on in the next room breakfast wasnt the best turkey rashers instead of bacon no one to speak to about our room back home tryed ringing several times but no answer
The stay was very good. When I arrived I was suffering with a breathing bproblem. Thestaffmember on reception I immediately changed my room to a downstairs disability room. Very thouhgtful and considerate. Inhave stayed at the hotel before and always find it a pleasant stay and clean.
excellent value for money
spotlessly clean, ideally situated & including a breakfast that puts more expensive hotels to shame
Room was lovely & clean. Bathroom was lovely with a great shower. Toilet pressure wasn't great though, flush was rubbish. Great to have off road parking on site. Breakfast was lovely. Young Girl serving breakfast was really lovely. Reception on checkin though was awful, no welcome, no smile etc.
The best thing was we had a refund back into our account. We had a room with a broken
Hotel was pretty battered, holes and large dents/scuffs on walls, damaged furniture but worse was shower, could not be used as nowhere to hang shower head! Service at breakfast was poor but food was reasonable.
I was in room 5. In thr room below me there was some kind of motor running on/off all night long. I had no sleep and left with a bad headache ruining my day.
Very warm welcome and great place to stay.
It. Was excellent stay,. My room bed was wobbly. when i complained,. The gentleman at the receiptient gave me a nice double bed room.
Basic
Very small but a nicely presented room given the cheap price. The shower was surprisingly strong. There is off road parking but it is limited and someone had to move for me to fit in. We didn’t have breakfast and instead walked to the Wetherspoons as we were leaving Newport on the train anyway.
bed worn out. sleepless night
good stay for the price
pleasantly surprised after reading some reviews I thought I was in the wrong hotel, we get a double room but was offered a twin that we booked, but already settled in, spacious room on suite witch looked fairly new, fresh cooked breakfast with a choice hot/cold food. If you wanted to have a gripe about this hotel it looks like its a regular occurrence that the reception is always late opening.
Car parking inadequate
This is a bed and breakfast not a hotel. The car park is the driveway on a main rd. The passenger had to exit the vehicle so the car could be parked almost touching the house wall. The cooked breakfast consists of vegan bacon.some customers got orange juice others didnt get offered any. No breakfast menu just plonked on table in front of you.
Disappointing stay at Gateway Hotel.
Smelly and dirty carpets. Limited parking spaces. Missing light bubles and one working light in the room was really dim. Very noisey due to busy road and railway line nearby. Tiny room and horrible bed.
Receptionist had to be phoned took 20 mins to get keys seemed as though we were inconvenient to her. Room was what we expected right by the generator which kept us up most of tbe night
No frills, no effort.
Room was average, service at reception was slow.
