Funken lodge

Our stay fantastic, the room was comfortable, clean and had everything we needed. The temperature of the room was too hot and although we turned the thermostat to the lowest setting we still had to keep a window open. The staff were friendly and couldn’t do enough for us including organising trips and taxis. Richard and Cristobal especially. Every member we of staff we came into contact with was very friendly. The only drawback about the hotel is the hill leading up to it! Breakfast is good and hearty with a good selection to choose from. We dined in the restaurant one evening and we personally found it a little overrated. Food was good but basic, for instance the king crab was served on a bed of lettuce. We would recommend staying there because of the staff, but probably would stay more centrally next time

We had such an amazing time at Funken, the staff were so helpful. Being a short walk out of Longyearbyen was perfect for us to see the rest of the town and the stunning surroundings. We stayed for 6 days and loved every bit of it! We are already planning on returning February 2026. Only suggestion would be to add variety to the breakfast, buffet was small and didnt change during our stay. But this hasnt stopped us refurning.

Hotel quiet and clean. At breakfast they always ask for room number, however all people have breakfast included. No plant milk, no herring which I hoped for. Always the same options, no whole fruit. At sauna only one glass with water jug.

Best hotel in svalbard

Great hptel, cozy in the dark Svalbard winter! Went into some of the other hotels in svalbard and this was definetly thebest, cozy, great staff who were very helpful, and a good breakfast!

Could not fault the service of the reception team, so very welcoming and helpful. Breakfast staff were so lovely also.

Great property to stay at one of the nicest and unique northern communities. Front reception staff are excellent. The property is well maintained. Definitely will recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Svalbard.

I spent a total of 10 days in Svalbard at Funken lodge.. The staff was amazing.. Food was great.. Room was good for me needs.. The lodge sits a bit away from rest of town.. Walking down to shops and other eatery places is a short walk.. Bit longer walking back up hill.. But can call a taxi if want.. Buses will come and get ya and take ya back from excursion.. And you can book many from the lodge itself.. Thank you Funken for taking such great care of me..

I travel to Svalbard once a year for work and this is the best hotel in Longyearbyen for me.

Awesome little hotel with great staff! Very comfy beds and a great breakfast buffet daily. We loved the cozy seating arounds on the main floor to relax and hang out in, would definitely recommend this hotel for your trip to Svalbard!

Really lovely hotel, great lounge and common areas, really comfortable. It is a bit of a walk from the heart of town, so not so convenient.

Too far out from town center. The walk to town is fine but the walk back was a bit hard for a senior…

This is supposedly the best hotel in Longyearbyen and it lives up to its reputation. Breakfast was excellent, and the restaurant's food is very good. Hotel responds very promptly to emailed questions. Note: the single rooms are really only large enough for one person. Note also that this is a bit of a walk from the village, church or other attractions, although tour operators are happy to pick up and drop off at Funken.

Nice base for Svalbard activities

Nice hotel, comfortable bed. Lots of nice public space for hanging out - the music, while not loud could still be a bit lower. Very nice breakfast, with a lovely view from the dining area. A short hike from the center - not too far, but something to be aware of. All the tours will pick you up at the hotel though. Would happily stay here again.

Although bit long walk from centre of Longyearbyen, Funken Lodge has superb view. Welcome drink was good touch to start with. Shoes off at entrance. There are comfy slippers for use in the shoe shelf. Room was very cosy and well equipped (bedside 2 USB charging points, Nespresso coffee machine, coffee pods, teabag, toothbrush, sawing set, disposable razor, shaving form, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, something to read) everything I need. Breakfast was great choices (made to order omelettes, cereals, fruit, yogurt, fish, ham, cheese, smoothie, tea, coffee) and very attentive staffs. I was so impressed. I recommend highly this hotel.

Loved staying here, everyone was so welcoming and the hotel was so cozy and comfortable. A great place to warm up after our adventures. Also really loved that you don't wear shoes inside and the slippers they provide for you to wear.

Exceptional Service, Cozy Ambiance

The staff was absolutely wonderful, providing top-notch service throughout our visit. One of the highlights was the delightful 5 PM complementary snack, which was simply awesome and added a special touch to our evenings. The cozy ambiance of the Funken Hotel made our stay even more enjoyable. It truly felt like a home away from home. The only suggestion I would make would be to consider updating some of the rooms and showers. Additionally, offering better quality shampoo would be a nice touch.

A magical stay in a magical place. The rooms are beautiful and incredibly comfortable, the service and team are outstanding and friendly, the food is spectacular. Simply amazing! We will be back to see it all again in winter!

Perfection!

Absolutely the most friendly, courteous, helpful staff; all food and drinks were professionally handcrafted and wonderful; atmosphere was beyond comfortable and beautiful, even loved the bathroom soap scent; we would love to come back and wish we could stay at Funken Lodge for any trips!

A Funken good place to stay Funken Lodge is not only a great name but a fantastic hotel in tiny Longyearbyen, gateway to the North Pole. The hotel is modern, some of the rooms are smallish but the space itself is a great a place to unwind after a long hike or a boat ride for a Walrus or glacier expedition. It sits a short distance from the center of town and has a restaurant as well as four lounge areas with nice views. The staff was fantastic, check-in was easy and while the hotel can get very busy at times due to cruise ships coming in or leaving, the staff did their best to accommodate things like late check-outs and baggage storage. BTW one review mentioned having to store their bags under the stairs and this isn’t really true. When I came the first time, they had an area in the gym downstairs to store your luggage, and yes it is open, but this is Norway (sort-of) and my experience in Northern countries is that theft isn’t often a problem. When I returned the second time, they had completed renovations on a new luggage storage area and place for guests’ shoes in the downstairs area. It seems to run very smooth. I would suggest you take a larger room on the third floor if you can. The one I had on the second floor on my first visit was a little cramped and had no desk to work at, or much space, but there are tables in the main area in one of the “lounges” with plug-ins that are a bit of reach for power. 4.5 stars at the end of the Earth..who’d have knew

This is a very nice property, made all the better by the friendly staff. The location is not central and involves a walk up a slight hill if you’re coming from the town center. The standard room is tiny and ok for one night but not much longer..the larger double room is great. Bathrooms a fantastic with modern, hot and string showers. The bar and relaxation areas are superb. Cozy, warm and nice. Breakfast is a highlight. Great selection and a really cozy environment. I’d totally recommend this property..

Quick weekend get away

We enjoyed our stay over a long weekend. Hard to have a bad location in Svalbard, but it is a short walk to stores and other restaurants. The staff was extremely helpful providing information and recommendations during our stay. We had a fantastic meal at the Funktionærmessen restaurant our first evening and breakfast was great. Book any tours ahead of time for the best selection and timing.

Four time visitor to Svalbard recommends Funken

I have stayed at the Radisson Blu twice and Svalbard Hotell once. By far (and I mean by a lot), Funken is the best--the best reception area, bar (Sergii is the best bartender for sure!), restaurant, library, room--I don't even mind the location. I will definitely stay with you again next year for my 5th visit to Longyearbyen.

This place is awesome

Funken Lodge is awesome place and my stay there was great from the welcome drink to checking out. The room was clean, heated, the bed was comfortable and blankets warm (I was there during the winter). The stuff was very friendly and helpful with booking arctic-only adventures. There is also plenty of space for workoholics at the main level - tables, comfy couches and also a fireplace to snuggle by and read a book or talk with fellow travelers. I will be happy to stay there again next time I go to Svalbard. Also, its location of 15 minutes walk (roughly 1km) from the city center is a perfect opportunity for a beautiful walk with views and maybe even meeting a couple of local reindeers! =)

Could be 5 star...but due to service it is 3++

Very cool hotel, but amazingly bad service in the breakfast area. Nice setup but they do not manage to finish the service delivery. Waiters are checking their phone more then the guests. Maintenance in the windows are bad.... But the product is very fresh and cool. Best place to stay in Longyearbyen, but it cold be a star, now it is more like ok++

Great hotel

Funken Lodge is a great hotel. Excellent service, lovely rooms and bathrooms. The bar is a great place to relax and the food in the restaurant is excellent. Highly recommended.

I visited Longyearbyen for the Spitsbergen Marathon (1st June, 2019) and stayed for four nights at the Funken Lodge. I had a wonderful stay. This is a really lovely hotel, above the town with fantastic views of the Isfjorden. The room where you have breakfast - which is also the Funktionaermessen Restaurant - is wonderful, and the food and choices broad and good. The staff were just excellent. I am thinking of doing the marathon again next year just for an excuse to come back and stay here.

Very small room, ground floor with no view, fantastic bed, nice location, nice breakfast, but way to expensive.

From the minute you arrive to when you leave nothing is too much trouble for the staff. All of the lounge areas are cosy and relaxing. The rooms are well designed, clean and comfortable. All in all a superb hotel.

Very clean and comfortable. Excellent breakfast. My only complaint was that rooms have no desks, so if you plan to use a laptop, plan to sit with it awkwardly balanced on your lap. But then again, it is a laptop, after all.

Longyearbyen is great

Room was small, but big enough, clean, and had everything I needed. It's located on top of a hill, so the walk can be a bit challenging to get to other locations, especially if it's icy. The restaurant in the hotel is good, but overpriced.

Very cool hotel, cosy, warm and really high end food and drink. Hugely comfortable beds, the perfect escape from the polar night! Restaurant food was well worth the inevitable expense - really well cooked and imaginative. Couldn't be happier with our choice of hotel.

Very nice place. A bit pricey, but everywhere in Svalbard is. I was surprised at how nice the room was, considering how remote the place is. The bathroom itself was probably the nicest of any hotel I've stayed in. Free breakfast is pretty good. I remember asking for a recommendation on a place to eat and they wouldn't give me the name of an actual place besides the one in the hotel, so make sure you look up some places beforehand. They offer snacks at the bar area too if you need a midday snack, and there's a few lounge areas to pick from to eat in.

Different from rest of the world

No sleepers in room. Very dull breakfast. Only 1 moisture cream or other room amenities for your entire stay as they do not put new once existing are used or finished. No baby cot as well. Overall ok stay given its a remote location.

Recently remodeled. Very modern and the restaurant has the best view in Longyearbyen. It is a short walk up hill from the town so keep in mind if you will be going back and forth.

Stayed for two nights at a business trip. The rooms are quite small, but the hotel is newly renovated and very nice. The bed was a bit soft for my liking, but that's a personal preference. Good breakfast at the restaurant. Also had dinner in the restaurant one of the nights and it was very nice. A nice hotel that I have no problem recommending!

The Funken Lodge is a great place to stay in Longyearbyen. The room was very comfortable with good amenities. They have an inviting lounge area with a fire and many separate seating areas. The staff are very helpful and nice. The restaurant is good.

A beautifully stylish hotel, close to town and with food and cocktails to die for, the staff are wonderful and make you feel very welcome. More outdoor space would make this hotel perfect.

Fantastisk hotel med god beliggenhed

Funken Lodge er stedet at bo hvis du besøger Svalbard. Skøn atmosfære og god beliggenhed lidt udenfor byen (10-15min. at gå). Fantastisk morgenmad med alt hvad man ønsker. Hyggelige fællesområder der indbyder til afslapning og god mad fra baren, samt afternoon tea. Vi prøvede ikke restauranten på hotellet. Vi kommer helt sikkert tilbage.

Nice hotel with a great vibe. Resturant was very good with approachable fine dining and a nice view. Excellent room with a great bed and cozy ambiance. Short walk to shops and resturants in Lonyearbyen. All our daytrips did pick-ups at the hotel. Only wish the gym was a bit larger and better equipped. An outdoor hottub or sauna with the good views could have made this A+.

Herausragender freundlicher Service, schöne sehr gut ausgestattete Zimmer und ein wundervolles Ambiente, welches die Historie der Stadt Longyearbyen wiederspiegelt. Das Frühstück hat alles, was das Herz begehrt. Hervorzuheben ist auch das sehr gute zum Hotel gehörige Restaurant.

Best in Longyearbyen

A beatutiful room with all you can ask for. Cleaning and service is topp. I have Bern to a coupe of other hotels in Longyearbyen and Funken is the most exclusive and where you feel extra VIP. The interior, the personell, everything has that little extra. Breakfast is top and also the restaurant. And the bar with the very skilled bartenders… Yes, 10 out of 10 from me!

Super Hotel oben am Dorf mit genialer Aussicht übers ganze Dorf und den Fjord. Sehr gemütliche Lounge mit vielen kleinen sitzecken. Sehr feines Essen. Zimmer prima. Personal alle sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Komme gerne wieder!

Flott hotell, gode senger og fine rom. Treningsrom og sauna. Gangavstand til sentrum, men baren byr på enkle retter og tillegg har hotellet en flott restaurant. Frokost kunne vært bedre på utvalg og påfyll på fat. Pluss for hjemmelaget omelett. Alt i alt et hotell å anbefale, nydelig utsikt over byen.

Sehr schönes, gemütliches & toll eingerichtetes Hotel. Das Frühstücksbuffet ist vielfältig, frisch & lecker. Durch die Lage auf der Anhöhe hat man einen schönen Ausblick auf die Stadt. Der Service ist ebenfalls hervorragend. Man kann auch vor Ort Touren buchen, wenn man möchte.
