Great Service
The stay was horrible just horrible. The front desk staff was not polite nor pleasant. The room itself was not good. When we checked the room out we found alot of bed bugs on the floor, there was a tv but no cable hooked to it. The wifi did not work. The parking was zero it was out back and there were no room to park. The pictures on the booking are from a different hotel as they do not look anything like the hotel. Tried to explain to front desk about the bed bugs but they refused to acknowledge it. Will never stay there again
Terrible Experience - Avoid at All Costs If I could give zero stars, I would. The Commons Inn in Halifax was an absolute nightmare from start to finish. The facilities are outdated, filthy, and poorly maintained. The room smelled like mildew, the sheets were questionable at best, and the bathroom was barely functional. But the worst part of the experience was the staff, particularly a young Asian male who works there. His attitude was appalling—rude, dismissive, and completely unprofessional. He acted like guests were an inconvenience, rolling his eyes at every question and refusing to offer any sort of assistance. His hostility and arrogance were completely out of place in the hospitality industry. I’ve stayed in budget accommodations before, but this place took the cake for being downright disrespectful and disgusting. Do yourself a favor and stay literally anywhere else.
Don’t. Just don’t.
My friend and I had a horrible stay. Crammed parking, plus they charge for it! Be careful while staying here
If your looking for a cheap place to sleep and not spend alot of time in the room than this place is for you. If your looking for a clean and nice room its not for you. The shower leaks water all over the floor, and theres mice in the room running around behind the dresser and mini fridge. Not what you wang to see when trying to fall asleep.
no free parking and curtains does not close properly and our room beside the road and tv was not working we spend an hour trying and no heating system.
It was run down. It’s affordable and walking distance to the downtown but otherwise has no redeeming features.
I had a terrible stay, our fridge was making lot of noise and we informed the front desk. They never offered to change our room and on top of it told us not to unplug the fridge. We couldn't sleep whole night, when i reached out to expedia customer service, they were no help as well. They told me they are 3rd party, why you guys are charging me? If you can not refund me?
We liked the area, lots of dining opportunities, close to downtown activities. Drawback was no parking, paid parking for a few vehicles in the back. Also the TV in our room could not hook to the service.
Improve the availability of housekeeper everyday and completeness of main needs such as toothbrush and electric kettle
Good location but wait until the renovations are complete.
The Commons Inn is in a unique area of Halifax, within reasonable walking distance of downtown. The building appears rundown from the outside, however effort has been put into renovating and cleaning up the rooms. If you enjoy character- this lodging is for you.
The room is nice and clean, no Microwave though and the area is a little loud.
This place is not as advertised. Its pretty much a mattress on the floor with 2 thin pillows. There was no place to sit. The place was very noisey. There are a lot of drug addicts and very sketchy people hanging around there. There is no parking there. We didnt even stay.We checked in and then checked out. No refund was offered. They just told us that it was our fault for not reading the reviews. You are better off sleeping in the car. Don't waste your time or money by going to this place. You will be disappointed. I could not rate this place a zero star or I would have.
Place was decent enough in the cheap affordable range. It wasn't the fanciest of places but it was as advertised
Okay
There was mold in bathroom and the room wasnt very clean and smelled. Told staff and they did nothing. I told them it isnt good to have mold its a health concern and one women in back was saying threats, threats! Wouldnt recommend staying there! And im not picky when it comes to staying at places. I was so stiffed up in morning barely slept.
Room condition is not worth of that money.
The property was good value for money
An older, historic building, lovingly being cared for to share with others. Close to everything.
It appeared clean at first, but everything is old and worn, and then I noticed the bedside table had clearly not been cleaned. It felt very sketchy in the area and around the hotel. Locals I spoke to could not believe I was staying there. Avoid.
property under construction
Simple but dated property. Decent location, walk to many restaurants.
Friendly staff upon arriving, reasonable rates for the budget conscious. Shower track could use some extra cleaning. Strict policies. Parking extra. Basic accommodations
It was an old building which was good but it needs a lot of renovations
Not much to like.!!! No cable TV, Wifi has a poor connection, some staff I heard talking about their customers. Very dull place to stay. I really wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone. Needs to have cable tv and less chatter about their customers, why Expedia would recommend this hotel for anyone’s stay is beyond me.
Not great. No services. Had to get own towels and fight for basic room service. Very convenient for where we needed to get to. Don't have the energy to name all the negative
Looks like a rundown apartment. Not in a good location and wiring is visible and doesn’t look safe. It smells musty the tv doesn’t work, bathroom is smaller than a portable toilet deck and rooftop is very dirty and not maintained. The parking space can hold maybe 4 cars. But it was cheap
the place was in the middle of renovation so construction dirt and noise depending on which part of the building staff seems hard working but not professional very shady characters staying in the property we got one small used soap bar and had to ask for another one internet signal is week, not coffee machine or kettle to make tea, but there is a small fridge and microwave shower is decent and water pressure is good beds were comfortable and clean area is close to boardwalk (25 min walk) with few delis/cafe's and bars I would only recommend if you are travelling and trying to keep accommodation costs to a minimum and are not planning on spending anytime in hte motel except to sleep (not table/chairs/etc in the room and I got the premium room) for additional $25/night you can get much nicer places
nein
Hotel needs to be deep cleaned.
The staff were extremely nice. The property however is poorly kept and the inside disjointed. Wires and cables running outside of walls , old dark hallways. No cable television available. My room was very clean and sheets were clean. It does need a major bathroom upgrade and improvement to finishes. 1 ply toilet paper and ketchup packets of shampoo that are impossible to open with wet hands is really not necessary to skimp on.
We were put in a room that was not up to fire code. The curtains were pulled closed and when we opened them we were looking into the inside framing of a separate new under construction building. The “hotel” in general was just kind of terrifying. Parking was really bad and the hotel changed an additional $20 per night for that.
Terrible
…
Very nice and chill spot in the North End
Not bad!
Based on the previous reviews, I was a little afraid, but it was better than anticipated. The building is old and the Inn is definitely odd, but the room was clean and everything was basic but fine. The people at the desk were efficient and friendly. There are only a few parking spots and you do have to pay $20 for a parking spot. There is no wifi and no TV, also.
Do not stay here unless you absolutely need to. It's priced like a hotel but it's really a motel: no services, no elevator, no parking, no extra linens, nothing. The room was dirty and the comforter was black, had burn holes, and was extremely old. The pillows were tiny and thin. We were 2 adults but could only get a single key. The people running this should be ashamed and at worst, this is a money laundering front. Don't stay here.
Great little spot in the middle of downtown
20 minutes to water front walking.Area of hotel is fine.
Hate property
Needs work
Do not stay at the Commons Inn.
Scam. Not what was advertised on the booking site nor on the Commons Inn site. Not ok to charge that much for what we got, no matter the location. Not appropriate for families. Noisey (inside and out). Mold in bathrooms, floor slanted so bad we had to put pillows at foot of bed to sleep. No where to sit with a table (even a small table). We asked for a refund for 1 of our 4 nights or at least a change of rooms (we had 2 rooms). They could not and would not do anything to address the problems. We left 1 night early anyway and booked another hotel just to get some sleep and be able to be comfortable as a family. Rip off. And they charge $50 for an extra key card (even though there are 2 people in the room) which you get back at end of stay - if it is lost they keep the $50 - again, not appropriate for families or any other situation where you may lose a plastic card that probably costs a dollar. They charge $20.00 a night for parking and don't have enough parking for everyone who pays. No cleaning of rooms or halls while we were there (3 nights). Advertised "renovated" - they are not, they are in the process and didn't let us know before we paid. Had I known any of this, we would not have booked there. I expect more diligence from the booking site as well as no price gouging from the hotel. Tried to speak with the manager or person in charge and they apparently don't know when that person will ever be there. And crepe paper for toilet paper. TV wouldn't turn on.
The building is under renovation and is dirty and messy, parking has to be outside on the street
Place was not as advertised, would give a zero star if it was an option
Stay at your own risk!
When you first pull up there isn’t much. Parking is limited. We were expecting the worse just based on the outside. But as they say, never judge a book by its cover. The rooms were nice and updated. It is near downtown which is nice. Definitely would recommend
$20.00 paid parking in an area for 6 vehicles full of construction materials. Very small room also with construction surrounding. View out of our window was into another room they are building. Not 175.00 room. Internet signal so low it wouldn't connect, air conditioner too old and loud to run and that's the only amenities
Last Resort Place to Stay.
Just needed an overnight stay to drop my son off at the airport early morning so we booked a room with two twin beds. 1. No parking (there used to be free parking), or you can pay $20 for parking. 2. Reminded-no smoking or $200 cleaning fee. 3. One key card-"don't lose it or we charge you $20". 4. Cheap AC unit that cycles on-off with three different levels of annoying loud noises. Noisy neighbours. (It was a Sat night so not the problem of the owners). Had to unplug the blinking clock radio. Window curtains don't close completely letting in street light. Didn't watch TV but he said something about no cable service. Wi-fi worked. The Commons Inn used to be kind of a cool funky place to stay, but now it's just kind of annoying—and not cheap.
Property was inexpensive compared to the market and right beside an excellent tavern and great Deli - Parking was limited but in fairness the room was clean, not a fan of Internet TV but the proximity to really cool bars and restaurants make it an interesting selection
No car-parking at all
It had a bed
It was a cute spot! New renos def helped I think!
Room was very tiny. It didn’t look like a hotel room from any angle.
I’d come back for sure.
Contrary to many other reviews, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised here. Clean room, friendly front desk clerk. Neighbourhood is a little questionable however, I felt safe. Parking was a little tough to find though. Two minute walk at most. Stayed for two nights. Good pizza place around the corner.
Clean property. They charge extra for parking. One of the receptionist is very rude. Otherwise it’s clean quiet and economic.
For $240 per night, one might expect a working TV and perhaps a coffee percolator in the room. This place has all the charm of a Hostel, lots of druggies on this street, dirty halls and even single ply toilet paper to boot. The bed literally was 16” above the floor level. Slamming doors kept us awake both nights and early mornings. And they have to physically check your room out when you are checking out with a $200 hold on your credit card. Hard to believe they actually are allowed to advertise on hotel apps. Not worthy of a 2 star rating. Never again at this place.
Bed was small hard and on the floor. 1 bedside table instead of two. No bathtub, stuck going in . NO PARKING ,unless paying $15 extra . NOT worth $150 a night . Siren's 3 times overnight sheet are startched and uncomfortable. Loud peson checked in speaking loudly ! No one said shhh. Wouldn't recommend to anyone unless desperate! I wished i could have slept elsewear . An taking note never again !
Commons in
We booked accidentally on the Hotels.com and then customer service tried to help us get it fixed but the commons in were very rude and would not cancel it, as we were being charged we decided we mis well go, we read the reviews and were very nervous upon arriving. We could not find parking it is a very sketchy place and when we did find a spot we were blocked in by many cars and had a hard time getting out. The service was poor and were lectured on rules when checking in harshly which made us feel unwelcomed the halls and stair wells stink like must and a foul odor. The room is extremely small and dirty the furniture is in rough shape and the bed was awful. We also felt unsafe completely. Walls paper thin, and house keeping vacuuming at 8 this morning up until 10. Overall disgusting we didn’t even sleep in the covers.
Room clean and comfortable!!
The room was ok , was clean , the bed was verry comfy but the entrance of the hotel The corridors ouff could need a little bit more cleaning.
We spent two nights there. The hotel is in the downtown area of Halifax- very close to everything. There was construction going on, however, and there was no parking available. Parking on the streets proved to be a bit tricky. The TV was practically not working as a TV and we were not able to connect it to internet either. Otherwise, the room was clean and the staff was very helpful and friendly
Street parking is a problem
No dryers in washroom, no tap water available and no water at reception. Building is very old. $50 extra charges in case you loose your room access card which I never heard about that at other hotels.
There are not enough spaces for parking.inside the rooms no table or cutlery .aircon make noises.
No coffee no breakfast
Advertised breakfast buffet, no breakfast served, no coffee service in the rooms either. Hotel in need of serious updating. Otherwise great location and room was clean.
Crackheads around the building. No elevator. People walking around all night long. Room too small. Ac noisy. No toilet paper. Tv didnt work. Broken wall plugs.
The photo of the room is a bit misleading. The room was dusty but otherwise clean. The air-conditioner which was 2 feet from the bed was noisy but if you didn't have it on it was way too hot...would i stay there again no but i think with some upgrades it could be good
Pictures may look clean. Walls and bathroom door dirty, had not been wiped in a long time and toilet dried urine on it. Strong musty smell.
No cable in room, wi-fi was worst than dial-up, could here the neighbour servicing her clients all night!. Spend the few dollars more, and got to a real hotel! Will not repeat!
It was an unsafe area. No parking. The room was next to the reception and throughout the night there was constant banging from the floor above. I didnt feel safe at all.
Worst hotel ever , first it was completely filthy, everything is old and moldy. Our a/c unit was completely full of mold. Hot water takes 10 minutes to warm up , sink don’t have hot water, are is full of crack heads, no view, smells bad, not one bit nice or fancy… need 200$ cash deposit on top of the payment, no television , no wifi when we stayed nothing. Stay away
Good for a quick place to stay.
Even though the bedroom was renovated and clean the place in general was not good, very old and pricy and people at midnight making a lot of noise, it made me feel insecure I locked the door with my chair, I do not recommend unless is an emergency.
Great staff
Staff was great. Hotel is older but once you get in and comfortable- it’s clean and quiet. 5 Stars to the kind staff!
We did not stay here as the reviews were so bad. We wanted to stop in and judge the property but we could not find a place to park. Beware there is no parking space available at this hotel. If there is parking it is limited and well hidden. I wish I had more thoroughly checked reviews of the hotel before we booked it.
Street parking was inconvenient, mostly because of the very convenient restaurants/delis/cafes in the neighbourhood.
Property is close to downtown, clean and convenient.
Was not pleasant. Towels were dirty with some tissue paper. Bedsheets stained too.
The place is quite old but once you get over that it was not bad at all. Bathroom was renovated, the room was small but fine. They have no parking. The room had a nice microwave and a very nice mini fridge. The tv has no cable but there is a chrome cast. I would stay there again.
Hotel was terrible
No working TV and there's a foul smell. the lady at night is not very helpful.
Good stay
After reading the comments here, we were prepared for everything. But there was absolutely nothing to complain about. Of course, it's not a 5-star-hotel, but it was more than OK for a stay for one night before catching the next flight. The room was clean, comfortable, the WiFi worked fine, and Chinese staff was friendly. The bus stop for airport bus no. 320 is some 10-minutes-walk away as is the promenade. The price at the time we booked was not bad. Would stay again.
NO PARKING, staff very rude, poor poor location and dirty. Checked in but did not stay. Very disappointed with Expedia. Went to Sandman
Nothing good to say
Location was convenient and close to Dal and downtown. Nice neighborhood character. Some noise of doors closing in night. Clean, in fancy room.
This was way overpriced with the service that was received. The walls were paper thin, and it was easy to tell there was nefarious business happening in and around the facility. There was hardly any amenities and there was no security at the front door, anyone can walk in off the street and be right outside your door. I would not stay here again.
Guy on the desk was nice. Nothing else positive
Nothing too fancy, but the place is comfortable enough, and the price is right. If you just need a bed in the city, then this is perfect; comfortable, safe, and affordable. If you require lots of niceties, then I would recommend somewhere else.
There is nothing unique. No parking. No cable. No coffee or water. No elevator.
Stairs
Older, but clean hotel in downtown Halifax. One of the receptionist was extremely helpful and friendly, other less so. Be warned, there is no elevator,, only very steep STAIRS (and I was on fourth floor) Overall quite good and well priced in compassion or the other downtown Halifax hotels. Recommend it but only if you and your luggage can manage the stairs.
Was on the 200 level room and stayed one night. Very noisy all night people in and out hence no sleep. Felt tired in the morning. No cable only wifi. Its cheap but noisy, really noisy. Doing construction outside so car was blocked in, lotsa garbage all over the place. Lotsa creepy druggie people all around the area, and stying in the building. smoke all over the place. Unless you want the cheapest stay away.
Ok
Some of the furniture was falling apart. Wall were roughly patched and painted. There was no phone or clock. The bedroom and bathroom were not very clean. Very noisy. Guests next door arrived at 4:30am. Kept talking, playing music and slamming the door until 6:00am. Had to park on the street. Extremely overpriced.
Staff is very friendly and polite. Room condition is ok, very clean but bit tiny, price is relatively affordable. Can hear music from other rooms but quiet after 12am. Overall good experience.
Staff is not friendly and helpful. Worst thing they dont have parking over there.. i wasted my money over there. I will not suggest anybody to book this place.
Très decu
Très déçu, pas de cafetière dans la chambre, joint de porte de douche sale, pas d’accès direct à la télévision et cher 😟
I like to stay in old hotels. This is an old building currently getting a facelift. The renovation project is ambitious and my room was comfortable. The hotel is a 25-minute walk from the tourist end of the downtown marina of Halifax. This hotel has three major flaws: 1. If your booked room happens to become ready for occupancy before the 3:00 check-in, there is an extra charge. 2. Parking on the street is limited. There is an additional $20.00 fee to use the staff parking lot. 3. I interacted with three of the reception staff over two days. Two of three were robotic, devoid of expression or personality. Maybe they are tired, or bored… A better bet is to stay downtown at the Barrington. For just a bit more cost, you get a better room with standard hotel services, situated in downtown Halifax, free parking, a bar/restaurant/cafe on site, and friendly, accommodating staff.
Good central location and affordable. Decent spot for a short stay in Halifax.
