Close to beach is about all the good things to say. Large waves not for weak swimmers so my wife would not go in. Toilets backed up repeatedly, reported it before we went out for the day, was told it was fixed and if it continued to happen they would move us to another room but by time we got back after 5pm there was no one at the office to talk too.Room also had mold on the walls in the bathroom and one morning we had no water at all for a while. We ended up leaving two days early and went elsewhere. Went to the restaurant to eat a little after 5 pm and it was closed so decided to go down the street to eat, went got ready to go out after hiking all day and as we were leaving the two workers were opening it up. We said gee we thought you were closed. They told us they were on a break which lasted for a good 1/2 hr or so. All this and you had to drive a couple miles on a dirt road to get there...never again!

We did not have long to enjoy this property due to our plans. Check in was easy. We were offered a tour of the property but we only needed our room and the restaurant so it was not needed. The property has on-site security, the restaurant was good for both dinner and breakfast, and the pool looked nice but we didn't use.

The property is very secluded on a dirt road and you have basically your own beach! The included breakfast as well as the other food we ate was fantastic! The staff was very nice and friendly. They went out of their way to make sure we were happy! Great resort and we will definitely come back!

Disappointing

Intermittent water supply and almost no hot water. Absurdly high restaurant and bar prices. Go to the Mar y Sol down the street (which is excellent!). We won't be back.

We stayed for 5 nights in an Ocean View Room with Balcony. I fail to understand all the recent 9+ reviews for this hotel. I have travelled extensively and I am very lenient with ratings because I want to support tourism. This hotel would earn a maximum of 7.0 rating. Pros: 1. Quite Spot 2. Great view 3. Balcon is large and furnished with rattan furniture 4. Staff all speaks English and very friendly. 5. Onsite free laudry service Cons: 1. Building and furniture are all showing age to the point of needing changes immediately. 2. Beach is very muddy and dirty. This may be caused by the rainy season. 3. Food selection is poor, quality is average and overly expensive since everything is marked in USD. 4. The hotel is located in a non-tourist town and far away from all the tour attractions. Jaconis about 1 hour away and Quepos is about 45 minutes away by car. If you don't have a vehicle, you will likely be stuck at the hotel for the entire duration. 5. Wifi signal is extremely poor in rooms and there is no cellphone signal at all. Must drive towards town for about 2km to get celll signal.

We loved it. It’s a small hotel with amazing service and extremely friendly staff that go out of their way to make you feel at home. If you want out of the way, rustic, and on the beach you’ll love this. Big shout out to Anderson, Jason, and Gabriela!! Gorgeous black sand beach with macaws and monkeys all around. What more do you need?

Loved this property! Here are some facts before staying-hotel was down a 4mile gravel road. We thought we took a wrong turn, but no. It is a bit secluded so get things before you get in and get settled. It was the most relaxed we felt in a long time and after doing adventure excursions earlier in the week it was nice to relax. The hotel handled our COVID tests before our flight and also let us know our son left his wallet there-oops. They were great and every staff member we spoke to helped us. Food was excellent and we didn’t even try anywhere else because it was well priced and delicious-plus we weren’t there long. Security guard to let you in and out warned us to be careful out and about if we left. Monkeys all around and flocks of parakeets and parrots. I would definitely go back.

The reviews made this place sound pretty amazing but we felt it’s not really worth a stop over. Yes it’s remote and off the beaten path but there are much nicer remote places to stop over and get a beach to yourselves. We would not recommend this as an amazing stop. But the hotel was nice with good ownership.

Nice place.

Trees are blocking the ocean so pictures are misleading, but beach is 120 seconds from the room. People are very nice, rooms are clean so no regrets. Ask the reception for Covid test, they arrange it for you. Food is average but pretty much same wherever you go throughout the coast.

We absolutely loved our stay at this beachfront hotel. We were blown away by the large full apartment like setting with 2 large balconies. The staff was wonderful, especially Jean who checked us in, arranged a tour to Manuel Antonio and worked in the restaurant. Tons of free amenities and very good breakfast. Relaxing at the quiet private beach with the provided beach chairs was so relaxing. So nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby cities. If you want a relaxing stay away from crowds of tourists, then this is your place. Definitely would recommend a car and to stop off at the grocery store to get any snacks for the room (full kitchen) on your way I , as the place is a bit off the beaten path, down an unlaced road (so worth it.)

This hotel is a little off the beaten path and a gem. I would highly recommend it. The hotel grounds are beautiful and the staff is very helpful and attentive. The beach is stunning - and black sand in places! We saw monkeys playing in the trees outside the hotel.Excellent hot water and wifi. Would definitely stay here again. This hotel was about a 50 minute drive to Manuel Antonio National Park, and we were glad that we weren't staying right in that area because it was extremely touristy and busy. The property was very well maintained (without looking like a generic resort like other places), the staff ere wonderful, and the restaurant was amazing! The beach was not one of those crowded "resort beaches" -- there was a maximum of 5 people at any given time (including the two of us). In addition, the beach stretched on for an hour's walk in either direction, so space was not an issue. One minor point that the hotel owner mentioned was that some guests were not fans of the driftwood on the beach. I thought it was noticeable, but it was no where near obstructive (again, practically endless beach). Personally, I wouldn't have even thought that would be an "issue" had he not mentioned it.

A No Start Hotel with a 3 Star Hotel price that is BETTER than a 5 STAR HOTEL! If you are a family or a romantic couple, someone in need of rest and relaxation, someone that wants to enjoy the beach or someone that just wants to escape the rat race, you will rate this hotel at least a 9 out of 10. Great peoBeing ple from the owner, manager, front desk, the chef and his food, housekeeping and everyone else that works there. The hotel is great and keeps getting better from continuous improvements made to every facet. I gave the comfort level 4 smiley faces but it is above average and getting better. Excellent property, friendly staff, at the beach

Check in was fast and easy and we were given a quick tour of the property. It's a two minute walk across a quiet road to the beach, and the staff even offer to set up hammocks or chairs for you, and there was a volleyball net. After a quick swim in the ocean, we went to the very warm pool (which is open 24 hours!). The property is very well maintained, very friendly staff, and very very relaxing. The only downside is the road to get there is a little bumpy and the hotel is a ways off the main road (but in some ways that was a very welcomed change). I highly recommend staying here.

We visited Cocomar for 3 days in March 2018. We stayed in room 13 which was very roomy with a king bed and a single bed. Lovely bathroom with large shower and gorgeous hand-painted double sinks. The view from our outdoor, tiled patio was of ocean and palm trees. This resort has a nice pool. Added features were the Iguanas and Land crabs around the resort which were quite entertaining. Beautiful setting at the edge of a deserted black-sand beach facing south, aligned with sunrise and sunset. Very friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable, clean rooms with good air conditioning, mini refrigerator, closet with drawers; spacious bathroom stocked with soap and fresh towels daily. Two buildings with single units at all four corners, on two floors, giving you a choice of eight single rooms with ocean views, and eight facing the parking area. Large floor-through suites at the center of each building. Outdoor showers and a beautiful pool area with bathrooms and spa. Close-out waves on the beach aren't much good for surfing, but good swimming with some rip currents. The only thing we didn't understand was the prices at the restaurant which are outrageous. This is the only place we visited in Costa Rica where tax and gratuity are NOT included in the price. Skip the Cocomar restaurant - except the delicious, free breakfast - and visit the nearby bar/restaurant on the same dirt road.

Decent Place for Families

We stayed in two suites with kitchens for our family of 7 and our small dog. Located across a small road from the beach. Palo Seco does not have tons of people, so there are times you are on the beach by yourself, and most of the time you are there with just the guests from the hotel (which aren't many). The staff is very friendly. We had some mix-up with the hotel's system not recognizing that both our rooms were paid for, but we straightened it all out within a half-hour. The shower has both rainfall and a hand spray, with decent water pressure and hot water. Good towels. Beds were hard. Pillows okay. The furniture was pretty much all made of bamboo. You can get beach chairs/camping chairs from the reception office. There is a volleyball net, and some shaded areas on the beach. The restaurant was small, but had a good menu. Hot breakfast every morning - the same stuff each morning, eggs, Gallo Pinto, maduros, tiny pancakes, bread & jam, fruit. The power went out for three hours the first night, but the restaurant was open (gas stove). Large balconies, and the kitchen was a full-sized one with a full fridge and oven/range, as well as a dishwasher. Older pots/pans/knives. There were a/c units in both the bedroom and the main living area. The rooms are NOT soundproof. We did use the pool. It was a little small, and not very clean. Waves on this beach are very nice. We found lots of pretty colored rocks, polished by the ocean, here, but not so many shells. Good wi-fi.

Awesome - well maintained, top notch facility.

Great place on an awesome beach - stay an extra day so you don’t leave disappointed that you didn’t spend a whole day enjoying the pool and beach onsite!! Our only regret was not being here long enough!

Great place with great people!

It was short stay, but an awesome experience. I’ve never felt so welcomed in a hotel before, the staff and management were super friendly and the location is beautiful. I will definitely go back with more time so I can take the tours they recommend.

My husband and I stayed one evening in transit between the Osa and Liberia. Though it wasn't our typical place to stay, for our short time spent there, it did suffice. Hotel front desk staff was very helpful and pleasant. Parking was ample and access to our room was easy for carrying luggage to and from. A beautiful beach across the road was perfect for our morning walk.

Great place. Just needs a better road in.

Brad and his team at Cocomar did all you could ask to make our stay comfortable. They booked a private tour at the park for us, gave us dinner suggestions, when we didn't eat at the restaurant there, and our room was incredible. The only suggestion, that's outside of their hands is the road in needs some help. It's no impassible, just a little dusty at time but the views at sunset make it all worth it.

Yes it’s out of the way but you’re meters from the beach that is km’s long with almost no people. It really is a hidden gem.

Nice secluded hotel right on the beach.

The Cocomar is a wonderful hotel. It is extremely secluded. The hotel is located just across the street from the beach. The hotel staff was wonderful and extremely helpful and welcoming. It was exactly what we were looking for when staying in the area. We stayed in the area for the beach and Manuel Antonio park. The beach was almost always empty. The beach was extremely flat and you could go out extremely far and not have water above you knees. Drive to Manuel Antonio is only about 40 minutes so it was perfect for us. Rooms were clean. Restaurant was nice. Couldn't ask for much more.

Forgetable

Staff was out due to thanksgiving holiday (hello?), the person that checked us in was a friend of the owner, didn't know a thing about it. Never got the wifi password or pool towels. Terrible service, hotel was probably good in the 80s, nowadays it's outdated. It's cheap, but you get what you paid for.

Great hotel next to the beach!

What an excellent hotel at a beautiful beach with a wonderful owner (Chad) and his fabulous staff! From the second we walked into reception, we were greeted so warmly! We had discussed our planned activities and Chad had recommended the Monkey Mangrove Tour (which wasn't on our list), but trust me when I say....you can trust him and any recommendations he makes for you and your family (it was one of the best experiences on our trip)! We absolutely loved our 3 night stay at Cocomar and we were sad to leave. The location is great, right outside of town, nice and quiet, but convenient when you head out for your adventures! The sunsets are gorgeous, the beach is pristine, and we even played a little beach volleyball! The Cocomar has a wonderful pool that is warm enough to walk right into, but cool enough to ease you from the days heat. They have a restaurant on site, which the food was ok, but it was definitely a great convenience from when you were too exhausted from playing all day to head back out. I hate to say anything negative, because we had nothing but fun and absolutely loved our time here. We would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Cocomar Beachfront Resort!!!

A great place to relax away from the crowds

I decided to spend two weeks at the Cocomar to relax after a liveaboard dive vacation to Cocos Island. Even before I got to the hotel, the manager, Chad, was so helpful in answering my questions and helping me to arrange transportation to the hotel from the dock, saving me hours of time traveling back and forth. While I ended up NOT getting a rental car to sightsee all over, Chad said he could arrange for a rental car to be delivered to the hotel. I decided just to spend the time at the beach and reading by the pool. I did indulge in a relaxing in-room massage...twice! I had a fabulous spacious one bedroom suite, which was really an apartment, with a full kitchen, living area, dining area and two lanais. The staff even did my laundry. I was able to get into the town to buy groceries when needed, or I could give Chad a list and it would be taken care of. The (complimentary) breakfasts at the restaurant were tasty and entertaining, watching the nearby iguanas interact. The beach is just across the small dirt road and is so private and perfect to watch the sun melt into the sea. You could walk it probably for miles. The highlight of my stay was the Monkey Mangrove Tour nearby, where we were on a small boat and were able to spend time with the monkeys, even having them perch on our shoulder to lick smashed banana off our palm. I felt totally spoiled during my time at Cocomar. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. I look forward to returning.

Good value for the money

We enjoyed our stay here. My kids loved the pool and the room was comfy. The complimentary breakfast was good, especially the mini pancakes. The owner is always accessible and very passionate about his hotel. The beach is close and beautiful but not safe for swimming. My husband and son were out to their waists and got pulled by the rip tide which was scary! House cleaning could have done a better job with our room. I went to grab coffee and found our cups were used. Face clothes were never replenished, etc. All in all, this hotel was good value for the price.

Amazing location and great breakfast

This hotel was hard to drive to at night. We arrived at 130am. It's about a 5 minute trip on a feel road but was longer at night. The room was very clean and restaurant was great. This was a beachfront hotel to an amazing beach. That was by far the best part. Very secluded. And great waves.

Clean, off the beaten path.

Clean, with great customer service. You have to drive through a local neighborhood that's a little unnerving but you realize that everybody on the island drives thru it everyday. Also, there's about 4 miles of dirt road.
