Unless you look on the city lodge official website you’ll get a big surprise when your asked to pay a 140$ deposit on top of your room cost , let alone no information about there being no onsite parking because it is closed for repairs.
Great short stay
For the quality, cleanliness and facilities within the room, the price is exceptionally competitive. I was pleased with the location. Close to cbd, k road, and ponsonby. The room isn't the biggest but everything is super clean. My only complaint, like most of the hotel guests, is that the tv service provided by Sky went off during my first day at the accommodation and didn't return before i checked out. The reception staff were friendly. Special shout out to Simran who tried valiantly to resolve the tv issues.
Secure, parking within the area, staff great. Room was very basic, but clean & tidy. Met my needs and expectations.
Basic room. Awesome facilities. Great location. Perfect for our stay in Auckland. Would stay again.
It was an okay stay. The blinds in the room were a joke. The sunlight was maddening. I had to put up a blanket to keep the light out. In addition, the neighbors from the apartments next door were loud and obnoxious even late at nights. On the plus side, its fairly close to the CBD. You get what you pay for basically
Dry, accessible hotel
It’s actually a dry hotel, a bit like a hostel. There are shared kitchen and laundry facilities in the basement. Staff were friendly. Cleaning is done once a week similar to other hotels in Australia.
My start was excellent. The staff were super helpful, friendly and when out of there way. The only issue I had was having a friend come up to my room for a short while. He was questioned by the receptionist. Not sure what all that was about. I guess it's for security reasons. Shouldn't have been a problem as he wasn't staying with me.
Very easy process for check in and a nice spot for walking to places. Also close to bus station
Basic hotel room
Everything I needed. Close to shops, clubs and cinema. Very clean, friendly staff. Just like the photo but there was no bed-side light or luggage rack.
Convenient for a guest relying on public transport.
Good budget hotel close to food, shopping and transportation options. Staff are nice and accommodating as well.
Was advertised as double room...was a single bed with no cover...room was tiny. No guests or alcohol allowed. Tired and old. It was a shock. Location was the only upside.
Great location, quiet (even though at full capacity), was generally mostly clean (just needed a bit more attention to detail), had comfortable beds, was easy walking distance to shops and bus. Great breakfast available at J Love Cafe which was about a minute walk away. Not the flashest area but we felt perfectly safe. Good value for money.
Staff unlocked our door and opened it up while we were in our room. Very unprofessional they stated that they were checking if the room was clean as they forgot we had checked in, but we had only checked in 20mins prior to them letting themself in our room, they would of heard us through the door as we heard the key moving as the rooms are not sound proof. There was no real apology given and we felt gross knowing they could try open our door with our stuff in it if we were not there.
The location was excellent, everything was extremely clean, and the staff was incredibly attentive and polite.
there is no air condition in the room no TV in the room it’s was disaster. I couldn’t sleep all night.
Basic but clean and comfortable
No
Budget accomodation at its best, just what we needed gor a quick stop in Auckland - friendly staff
Reasonable stay at a reasonable lodge.
I like my stay and I would probably recommend to others. However, I didn’t like that my bed sheet and towel were not changed for the entire four days I stayed there.
Slow slow check in, smelled funny, and needs some renovating
Proximity to SKY City, waterfront
Noisy and the parking price is high.
Great Location good $ good
I thought the staff on desk were very friendly and helpful. The room itself was small, but was all I needed really. The room and bathroom were clean and tidy, and the bed was very comfortable.
Thank you, we enjoyed our week here
Very friendly staff. Room is clean.
The Bond Refund on Arrival $140.00 and Parking $25.00 per night should have been clear on the website and not sent after booking was made! Photo identification on Arrival should also have been clear and not suddenly requesting it upon arrival! The photo of the Fitness Facilities is misleading because its is not the property’s fitness facility but a gym down the road from the accommodation! Customer Service is not helpful. We will not be booking accommodation with City Lodge Accommodation again or recommend it to anyone which is disappointing!
Convenient to go CBD.
Good place, budget accommodation but it was clean and tidy and good location for k road and central city I would stay there again
Overall great for the price, walls are very thin but I'm not a light sleeper so this didn't bother me much. Truely a backpacker's scene
The soundproofing was definitely an issue, I could easily hear people in the hallways, noise in neighbouring rooms and various sorts of noise outside. No alcohol allowed in the room was a bit much, I'm not a 16 year-old trying to hide a 6-pack I bought with a fake ID from Mum and Dad. At the very least, it's affordable, but you're getting what you pay for.
Excellent location, close to CBD. Great value.
The room was warm and quiet, and the location is handy to the Aotea Centre. For snacks etc there's a minimart just across the road. If you want to cook there's a kitchen downstairs. I didn't realise it was a backpackers but wasn't a oroblem.Good value for money
Clean and well priced for a single night stay. Very noisy - both the building itself and the street below.
Amazing self serve kitchen options, nice staff, laundry facilities available ke at $4 nzd per wash and per dry. Property needs to be updated - I had to sleep with an eye mask on bc too much light and the mattress needed to be changed out. Overall 8 of 10 bc of mattress and too much light.
Nice facility with everything you need. Good kitchen and laundry room with a lounge for a fun game of pool.
Stay was fantastic, only drawback was our car was completely covered in bird poo after using the paid parking onsite
Fridge not cleaned..... last visitor's things in it. Door very difficult to lock. Lift took about 10 minutes Over $300 for a tiny, tiny room
Very disappointed in this accommodation, room is tiny. Didn't like being charged the deposit at check in. Would not stay here again.
Clean, the staff were excellent and excellent for a short stay.
I would never book here again. The rooms are small and smell musty. No Air Con in the rooms and they’re outdated and not very clean. We checked in and literally only stayed for 1 hour before deciding to check out and book elsewhere much nicer! You’re not allowed alcohol in your room, which is ridiculous or visitors either. The staff weren’t very friendly and the surrounding area wasn’t the nicest! I don’t recommend!
Out of hundreds of places, this is probably the worst place I’ve stayed in years. The worst part is it doesn’t have AC which is crazy for a subtropical first world city like Auckland. Was very uncomfortable. They treat you like a criminal, need a passport to check-in, license no good. They make you wait and check your room before you leave. It’s cheaper than most options, but you get what you pay for.
It’s bare because nes but was good location, had washing facilities there which was helpful- just what we wanted, simple, clean, affordable! They were very nice on my opinion
All staff members are nice and the room is so clean but the neighbors are so noisy.
Great stay
The room was adequate and clean with clean sheets and towels. The staff were great. The noise at night was disturbing. We were kept awake until 2.30am with people shouting in the street outside. They were arguing and swearing. At 5.30 the next morning the people in the room next to us arrived home and talked loudly for a couple of hours. the walls are thin and there is no double glazing. We were exhausted the next day. The room was hot and because of the street noise we could not have the windows open.
From the reception,, the room, amenities availability, and privacy , I would give it a 5 star, the only problem for me was the loud drunken disturbance from the main street.
The facilities and service while we were at the property were satisfactory. However the hotel held a USD $89 bond for damages on my credit card. I was assured at checkout that this would be refunded immediately to my card. It was not. Two days later I get a message from the hotel requesting all my credit card information in an insecure way, and saying I must upload images of my ID, credit card, and form with all my card details. This is totally unprofessional and not secure. And Travelocity doesn't support the upload of attachments anyway. The hotel should simply refund the charge back to my card. VERY DISSATISFIED. Avoid this hotel!
Checking in was a hassle
great time there, helful, nice….
If you are a night owl, stay somewhere else. I was woken up many times due to siren and poor blinds covering the window.
I was a bit unsure of how to rate this property. First and foremost, it is a hostel and had I known that, I would not have booked here. Having said that, while the room is rather small and is definitely bare bones, you do have your own bath, and basic toiletries are provided in addition to a water kettle, coffee and tea, and milk in the mini frig. So basically it is a hotel room. However, every guest we saw was younger than our own children, and we definitely received a few side-eye glares. Additionally, there was a lot of conversation in adjoining rooms as well as outside that we heard well past midnight, along with someone who decided they needed a smoothie at 1 in the morning. A side note that this is a YMCA facility and thus, does not allow alcohol. While we did bring in the 5 bottles of wine we had purchased while wine tasting a few days earlier, we did refrain from opening any. It did feel weird, thought, to be grown-ass adults and be told we can't drink.
Only negative i can say is our room was different than what we booked. We booked a twin room, twin bed stay but got two single beds. Other than that, the stay was good. Everything else was as expected.
Rude staff, noisy
I booked a single studio room . The room number is #109 which is at level 1 near to the road and next to the exit door to staircase. I can hear vehicles passing, the person who walked in / out the stairs. No hair dryer in the room but can borrow from the reception. The reception is 7 days 24 hours which is convenient. Anyway it’s just a one night stay , so everything is acceptable
Room was small but very clean, comfortable beds and pillows. Staff very friendly and well kept and supplied kitchen and game room in the basement. Will go back.
Very good as usual
Overpriced Comparatively
A bit overpriced for what you're paying, but nothing horribly wrong. The bed was an uncomfortable boxspring, but not the end of the world. The biggest complaint was the thinness of the walls and the noise: Someone that worked in the morning, very early, would play music and sing, which could be heard through the walls and wake us up. Otherwise, staff was helpful and polite. Just compared to the quality of other places we stayed for the same price, it falls short.
Area seems transient and run down. The property though was clean, convenient, quiet, and affordable
This is a YMCA owned hostel. It was perfect for us... 3 adult women in town for the Women's World Cup. Walkable, safe, clean. Private room and private toilet and shower. One bunk and one twin. Very basic, clean, safe and comfortable. It even had a TV. Huge kitchen downstairs for those wanting that amenity. If you are in town for experiences beyond staying in a nice hotel room looking at the view, this is a good choice.
I like the cleanliness and the quiet
Nice
Good security and helpful staff
A lot of noise from the streets at night
Decent stay, but cleaning could use some attention
The staff at the front desk were really friendly and helpful. The room was decently clean, but the cleaners didn't come very often, and when they did, they didn't do a great job of cleaning or changing the sheets and pillows. Despite that, I felt safe staying there, and everyone was really nice. Overall, I had a good experience and would consider staying here again.
Small room, just a stool to sit on so value for cost no great. Parking NZD25 a night is not secure and very limited to around 6 spots. P
Great place.
This property was great for our needs for a one night stay in the CBD, walking distance to universities, shops, cafes and restaurants. Communal facilities for cooking means you dont have to spend a fortune staying in the city. A little noise from the street at night but its a city, so not surprising.
Had everything we needed and was a good location to pick up our rental car the following day.
Basic accommodation, friendly staff.
Friendly and very helpful staff
Great location, great place nice facilities
Clean; great shower; provided a place to stay ; no bells or whistles
Noisy neighbors kept us up. Small rooms. Good for hostelers
Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Won’t Come Again
Worst place we have ever stayed: 1. Noisy, both from other guests and traffic, ambulances, fire engines and people on street all night. Slept with earplugs after first night. 2. Poorly ventilated/stuffy and it was only low 20s. 3. Room was tiny, double bed against two wall and wardrobe, nowhere to sit except on bed or one stool. 4. Wardrobe door missing, towel rail broken, although rail was ‘fixed’ during stay (but repairman left hole in the wall and old rail behind). Room was clean, but old and needs updating. 5. No room service for whole 5 days stay. Note on counter said they may not be able to do all rooms every day, but not once in 5 days is not acceptable and no compensation provided. Only good feature was communal kitchen which was large and well equipped, ovens, gas hot plates, microwaves and plenty of utensils, plates, pots, etc. Hotel participates in VIP program but we did not receive a room upgrade and thought our room was in one of the worst locations in the building, low down and facing noisiest roads. Hotel was not full during our stay. Poor value for money - the $230 rate on their website is a ripoff. Better to stay out in the suburbs and commute to city -probably only worth a one day visit. Area we stayed was grubby, rundown, lots of road/rail/building works as well as unsavoury types on the street. Did not consider going out at night as would not have felt safe walking from hotel into town. Disappointed in both hotel and Auckland.
This is not an upscale or even mid scale hotel. It's a room with a private bath. But it is well kept and the staff are very nice and it's a great walk (although uphill return) to the cbd. Perfect place to stay unless you are whiney and high maintenance. A big bang for the bucks!!!
Everything as expected
Very clean room with all basic amenities. Happy with stay and would reccomend to others.
No parking on site or in the street, found parking at YMCA further up the road. Was a great location though. Room pleasantly surprising, clean and had everything we needed.
Very handy Location that we have stayed on a few previous occasions. Rooms need an overhaul as carpet worn and Paintwork needs tiding. Human excrement was also smeared on the outside of the bathroom door not noticed at first as it is recessed into wall.
Stuff very friendly and helpful but unfortunately the room didn't smell very nice and the upkeep of it wasn't great - flaky roof and average bathroom.
Worst night ever
Worst night ever. Room was double booked, had me waiting for an hour to get me a new room. Noisy outside and inside with other guests talking the whole night, very thin walls. Room couldn’t be darkened so it go bright very early. Wish I had read the other reviews before. Don’t go there.
Everything ok
Auckland stay.
Convenient location. City centre and trains and ferries in easy walking distance. Kitchen facilities were very good. Would stay again.
Carpets are threadbare and room could do with a lick of paint but convenient location, friendly staff and I had a great view.
I loved everything about it except for the construction going on directly behind the lodge, where they started working noisily at 6:45. That's not the lodge's fault, but the council should be notified since it is prohibited to start construction at the ridiculous hour.
Excellent facilities for the price. The staff were very helpful and attentive to my needs.
Ok to check in without photo id
Good value for the money. Clean room. Beautiful bed. Comfy sleep.
Budget accommodation in central Auckland
For a budget hotel, this stay was well located, just 25 minutes downhill to the waterfront and provided the basics of what I needed for a good price. There is a lovely cafe just a minutes walk down the road - J Love, and a minimart across the road. While the room was serviced and well equipped, no extra milk was provided after the first night and out of the three nights I was there, I got about 2 minutes of hot shower, the rest just off cold. As the place was attended by just a security guard when I came and went late and early, I didn't worry about asking about these things.
Clean and well priced in a convenient place and would have rated higher but for the noisy construction going on next door
Average.
Average. Had difficulty understanding staff with foreign accent.

Great central location
Trouble free & easy - staff were polite, friendly and efficient - thank you all for another great weekend stay!
property all good noisy neighbor's
Great price, central location, friendly staff, just a bit noisy.
New Year's getaway
It was wonderful! It was a NY's eve stay and the room overlooked the Sky Tower where the fireworks was. The room is tidy and good size. The only downside but not the fault of the hotel is that no carpark available for us anymore due to the hotel fully booked up for NY's. Otherwise, it was a great stay.
