Amazing property right in the middle of downtown, absolutely loved it. Close to all the shopping, cable cars, subway, wharf, etc. The rooms were nice, but it is an old hotel! Beds were very comfortable, and I did not hear any street noise like other people. It all depends on which side of the hotel you’re staying on. The front desk staff were the best and most helpful staff I’ve ever seen! Highly recommend this property

Beautiful boutique hotel! Very tiny, but was perfect for what we needed. Location is great as it’s convenient for walking around the city. Trolley access, etc.

Let’s start off with the bed… this was very comfortable, so soft & fluffy. The pillows were the same. The bathtub was very deep if you enjoy taking baths and just relaxing. The closet looked like an entire room itself. We were able to store our luggage’s without them getting in the way. The safe is convenient to have there as well. The staff is amazing, we interacted with 7 different employees during our stay and all of them are just wonderful and make you feel comfortable. Thank you again!

Sadly, Union Square has suffered terribly from loss of retail. There aren’t many restaurants in the area anymore.

Really loved staying here, extremely affordable. The bed was soooo comfy! I appreciated the locked door in the evenings for safety reasons. Parking is close by and they offer you a voucher if you need one (for an extra fee of course). Only qualm we had was both of the elevator permits expired in 2022 and with how rickety it is, it definitely made us a tiny bit nervous on our rides up and down to the 12th floor.

I would definitely stay here again. Our room was small but quaint. It got a little on the warm side at night but we were able to crack a window open. Bedding was nice. Very functional and staff helpful. What I found convenient CVS, diner, restaurant next door, Mc Donald’s and cable car very close by. Hotel had fruit, cookies, water and filtered water for guest. The Chancellor Hotel was good to us. Thank you all. Made our first visit to SF awesome.

The hotel is an older small hotel. Small rooms and no air conditioners. It in the center of the downtown shopping and food area.

Excellent location and price. Have stayed here before too. For the price you pay the hotel is exceptional.

Very nice historic hotel in a great location.

Excellent staff. Bed was very comfortable and I was grateful for the pillow options. The room was clean and I was happy to have the fridge, updated TV with streaming options, and even bath salts for the tub. Unfortunately the walls are exceptionally thin and I had noisy neighbors on both sides. To their credit, they offer noise machines and ear plugs for those who need them.

A Gem on Union Square

This has become my go-to hotel when coming home to The City. It’s a great location and they have an awesome vibe going as well. It’s the little things.

A Gem for Budget Travelers

I can’t say enough good things about the Chancellor. I’ve stayed here for at least 30 nights, and every time the staff has been so friendly and accommodating. It’s always clean, and the beds are super comfy. Its location is great for catching transit to most everywhere in the city. Oh yeah, I’m usually able to check in about a hour early. Looking forward to next time!

This property is quaint and in a great location. It’s an older building so not the amenities that a larger box hotel would have. It’s charm & comfort make up for that.

Very clean, renovated old hotel. Located on a busy street with the cable car so, can be a bit noisy but the location is super convenient, one block from Union Square. Highly recommend.

This is an amazing hotel. My trip went exactly how I imagined. The location is perfect, right across the street from Union Square. Also, if you are looking for a location by the cable cars, you cant beat this. Will be staying here any time I come to San Francisco.

The hotel is in decent shape except the room that I stayed in, the toilet bowl was too low and small, it’s fitted just for kids, and at night, there’s constant noise or door slamming or closing.

Great location, very cool place to stay - old Victorian style. Front desk staff was rude, and accusatory. Check in was difficult, waited a while for parking situation as well.

The hotel is a good deal and the area is sketchy. Lots of homeless and drug addicted people are in the streets. We saw throw up, feces, and open peeing. Terribly sad - so, we moved to a safer neighborhood.

This was a great stay…only drawback was that the next door room was being renovated and they started @ 8am (which was fine because I work graveyard and was up already)

Loved this hotel. Our room was ready so we were able to check in much earlier. Room was on the smaller side. But we didn’t mind. They had cookies everyday. Their lobby offers you coffee and tea. We will return!

Our stay here at the Chancellor was truly an excellent experience. This place is full of elegance and character. It has everything I would want from a hotel. It was affordable yet made me feel wealthy. The hotel is so clean and the staff were always helpful. I would absolutely choose this hotel again and recommend it to others.

I would give the hotel 5 stars, but for the bed. The staff was nice and helpful. The hotel itself was historic, but well maintained. The room was average size and the bathroom was renovated and nice. But the bed was terrible. It's small, smaller even than the headboard and side table setup. The mattress was so soft you just sink into it. Every morning I woke up with horrible back pain. Trying to sleep 2 grown adults was cramped and then my head and feet were a good foot above my backside. The bed was honestly the only downside. If you're looking for a budget friendly hotel that is conveniently located, clean, and has decent amenities, this is a good choice as long as your back can handle the bed.

Great hotel

The hotel is located just in Union Square. The cable car just passes the hotel. The room has been newly renovated in high quality. Rare hotels in the US have such quality. The sheet and quilt are all naturally comfortable. High recommended.

It’s a basic hotel

This hotel is full of character, feels so high-end and clean. The front desk were so helpful. Love the location.

I had an excellent stay at the Chancellor Hotel. It is very well run, super clean, and the staff are genuinely kind and helpful. There were fun activities and music in Union Square while I was there. I felt very safe coming and going from the hotel and the location is excellent. Sears Fine Foods is right next door and has great breakfast. Two other diners are each one block away, and both Walgreens and CVS are nearby.

Room was small but clean, very quirt no outside noise.

My room was on the front of the building. You could see the streetcars and hear them all day and night. I enjoyed it and had no issues sleeping, but I could see some having an issue, even with the window closed (I kept it open all week) that is what I would say would be the only potential drawback for some. Place was clean, access to a lot of shopping, food and experiences. Easy access to BART for trips to and from the airport. Had all amenities I needed, and staff was always friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again.

Very friendly staff and well kept rooms and lobby. My only negative, that would be a smell on the floor that my room is located as I got off the elevator. I’m not sure if it was from people smoking or something else.

We loved the history of the hotel, and though it was clearly an old building, it had been nicely updated and was very comfortable.

Great Staff at this fine hotel

I was in San Francisco for a one day medical meeting at the St. Francis. 1) I arrived three hours earlier than check-in time and welcomed the offer to check in early (I don't recall that ever happening at other hotels). 2) The room was a bit warm and stuffy upon opening the door and I wished I could have opened a window, but could not. I noticed the fan (ultra quiet), turned it on and in minutes I was completely comfortable, and reminded so throughout the night. The unconditioned air contributed greately to the incredibly restful sleep I had that night. 3) I worked at the desk until dinner and when I returned I thought I would catch the news on TV, but it would not turn on. I phoned the front desk and within minutes maintenance was at my door, got everything fixed and was gone. I didn't see the invitation to "test-sleep" up to two of the ten interesting pillows offered, but will do so on my next visit. I will recommend your charming hotel to my friends, staff, and colleagues. Thank you. Robert L Stofac, M.D.

Staff was awesome. We've stayed here many times and they recognized us and had a wonderful surprise for our pre-valentine stay.

The Chancellor did not disappoint! The location was convenient, the price was right and the hotel was very, very nice.

Great service but a lot if street noise

I arrived in the morning cold and very wet and the hotel gave me access to my room early which was greatly appreciated. This was at no extra charge and I was able to change and go about my day. I had a few problems in getting somethings to work and the hotel were quick to send someone up to address them. I was n 2nd floor looking out into the street. This did mean a lot of street noise all night so I would recommend you ask for a room on a higher floor located on the inside. All the staff were friendly and no extra charge was made to store my luggage after check out. I was also offered fruit, water and popcorn ! Which were nice touches.

A friend & I stayed here with our children and requested adjoining rooms. They said they would if they were available. Ok no problem. The day of our arrival they said they were able to accommodate us. We took the kids out and about. Came back and they gave our friend’s room away to someone else. They broke their word and did not keep their promise. We were stuck for two days next to a really loud couple. The adjoining room door had a one inch gap under it so you get to hear your neighbor doing everything.

The hotel celebrated my birthday with a nice card, a bottle of bubbly wine and a birthday rubber duckie.

Smack dab on the cable car route. Dead center for Union Square shopping. Convenient to Foshermans wharf and Nob Hill. Rooms didnt have a coffee maler BUT the room didnhave a complimentary umbrella!!! Which i needed! Quaint boutique hotel. Definitely recommend!

Clean, great location

Trolley stop is right outside the hotel, and overall the hotel is in a great spot with restaurants close by. Very clean.

We absolutely love staying at The Chancellor! This is our hotel of choice when visiting SF. The location is very convenient, and the hotel itself is lovely. It is charming with beautiful architecture and the rooms have everything you need. Everything is clean and the staff is extremely friendly. My favorite part is the amenities! Complimentary cookies, coffee, and fruit in the lobby and candy and a cute rubber duck in the room. They also have different pillows you can order to make your stay even more cozy. We had a great time and can’t wait to come back!

For being in the middle of all the attractions and neighborhoods in San Francisco, the pricing was amazing. Definitely would stay again

Cozy

I've stayed here a number of times whilst attending a conference at the Moscone Centre. Staff are friendly and it is a very convenient location, less than 10 minutes walk from the nearest BART station. Area is safe. WiFi works well. Constant coffee in reception saves me a lot of money and there are also free cookies and a microwave. Rooms have a small fridge.

Very cute boutique hotel. The room was updated and very clean. Lots of charm and pretty furnishings. Nice onsite full bar. I’m a bit claustrophobic though and the elevators are very small. I should have asked for a lower floor. :) would definitely recommend and would go again for sure

The hotel is cute and very historic. The bed was… waaaaay too sift. Uncomfortably so unfortunately. Like a pen full of feather pillows. I had to put pillows under my back to be able to sleep.

incredible value, rooms are cozy and comfortable, loved that the bathtub was actually adult sized, and the bath salts provided were excellent. bed was very soft, not what I prefer but still slept like a baby. location is great and close to bart and other public transportation. Property was in great shape for 100 years old and the staff and service were exemplary. Alycia (?) the lobby bartender makes a great old fashioned. Will definitely stay here again!

The front desk was top notch at check-in. Room was comfortable and clean. Love the charm of the older hotel. We could hear the loud voices of the people next door, but that is true of most places. Great value.
