I’ve stayed many times. Always a wonderful experience. And the neighborhood keeps getting better and better.
It was just one night, but so far, so good! The breakfast can be improved, but it's a clean and neat place with friendly staff. I will recommend this.
Good value for money double rooms good size with balcony fridge decent size toilet and shower. Promenade location in the center if everything. Good hot and cold breakfast selection. Would stay again and recommend. Major danger at this hotel incase of fire do not follow emergency exit signs they all lead to chained and locked fire exits with heavy security bars which could present a death trap in case of a emergency. In case of evacuation only use stairs leading to main reception
Its the greek version of a low to average american motel. Clean, well placed and the staff are polite. Dont expect any greek xtras either in gifts or help. Well placed for major attraction and with ok soundproofing. Free breakfast but dont expect anythimg amazing i mostly stopped by the bakery next door instead. Many other restaurants close and subway tour bus area.
Clean hotel, close to all the tourist attractions. But the was a club close by. The music was extremely loud.
It was very close to the places i wanted to visit in Athens within walking distance everywhere, the rooftop terrace had a stunning view of the Acropolis more so at nighttime when it's lit up
Great location and hard working staff. But the hotel is too old and has bed bugs, which ruin my vacation. I could not sleep even after the staff changed my room. The staff said my bites are possible mosquito. I saw one bedbug and couldn’t get it. When I got the airport, people saw my big bites and asked if I got bedbugs bites. I said yes. The dysfunctional door lock of the rooms needs to be replaced. It took while to open which got me sweat. It is nothing wrong with the hard working staff, it is just too old and need update.
amazin area and hotel
Pluses: Excellent location, clean, friendly staff. Not so good: really cramped bathroom, tv channels are grat for locals and not for English-speaking, no wi-fi.
Over all good place to stay. Wish the roof top had cairs and tables to be able to enjoy the space better
Location is excellent - minutes from Monastiraki square, Acropolis is about 15 min, and shops, restaurants, grocery store all walkable. The hotel is a bit old (bathroom missing a doorknob).. The breakfast is healthy, filling and tasty: bread, boiled eggs, yogourt honey, jams, juice, cereal. AC worked well though in a joined room (there were 4 if us) it meant one room was a bit cold, the other a bit warm. Overall, you pay for what you get.
location. location. location
The location is excellent. Good team. The bed is comfortable. The shower is really small. The TV is also very small.
Let me say that for what this hotel is, it is great. Yes, it is an old building in an area of Athens that is just a little gritty. However, everything was functional and clean, the staff was helpful, the breakfast was great, there are excellent restaurants in the Psirri district behind the hotel, I never felt unsafe, and you are a very short walk from the Acropolis and Plaka. If you're on a budget and want to stay where the action is, the Cecil is a great choice.
We absolutely loved our stay here! The location was incredible, a 5 minute walk into town! It felt super safe and the staff were all very kind and helpful. The room was clean and everything worked great. We were super pleased and plan to return the next time we come to Athens!
Location, Friendly staff, Luggage storage - Disappointing breakfast Basic accomodation. Get what you pay for here.
A useful hotel in a good location.
The Cecil was recommended to us by a friend who stays there for a few days every year. It was very conveniently located and it fitted the bill for us. It's an unpretentious, unfussy place with no frills or fancies. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were fairly basic but plentiful. The rooms were cleaned daily (except Sunday) and towels changed as required. There is a lift to all floors. Our beds were comfortable. We overlooked the side street which was, I suspect, quiter than being at the front of the building. I would stay there again.
The room very clean Good breakfast
hard worn-out mattresses very tight bathroom and shower stall
This is an older hotel and lacked some of the facilities of modern hotels but then it has charm and character that the modern ones wouldn't. It was clean and the staff were helpful. It was very convenient for the railway for me as I was staying overnight between the airport and port (in both directions). For such a central location, it was fantastic value for money.
Well located, center of Athens, walk or metro distance to everything. The elevator is small, one person and luggage.
This place is small but convenient. The hotel staff are extremely friendly. The breakfast buffet is nothing fancy but good ( boiled eggs, juice, coffee, cheese, meat , bread , yogurt ). The hotel is ideal situated, close to the Monastiraki square where you shop, eat and people watch. The only issue we had was first thing in the morning there would be no hot water due to other guests having taken a shower. Also when taking a shower, water would get all over the bathroom floor due to the low shower guard at the bottom. Overall our stay was a pleasant experience and would stay here again !!
It is what it is.
I have to say...it is what it is. The Cecil is not a 5-star hotel. It is old, but is well kept. The staff was great, the room spotless, the breakfast adequate. It is in a great location for walking around the city. It enjoyed my stay there.
It is a good value for the money. Varying levels in the room and halls require attention to your step.
Cecil Hotel is very centrally situated. Five minute walk from metro and tourist area. The surrounding area is authentically Athenian,. lively and interesting. The hotel is basic, a bit old fashioned but excellent value, quiet and comfortable. There are lots of cafés, pastry shops and a large general store on the street below. A fridge is available on each floor for the use of guests. Rooms clean, towels changed daily and sheets every two to three days. From my experience appeals to a variety of age group and tourist. This was my second stay in Cecil Hotel.
comfortable for a couple of nights
I had a two-night stay in Athens. the hotel was conveniently located to a train station. six stairs from the street to the reception area and then there's an elevator to go to the rooms. breakfast was adequate (bread cheese ham hard boiled eggs Greek yogurt and honey, jam and cereal.). the folks at the desk are very friendly. the person to clean the room found something that I thought I lost and left it on the table. kudos to her!!!
The bathroom was small
No frills accommodation but clean and central to all the sites. I loved the charm of the building and the central lift. View from the roof area is wonderful. As a single traveller the room suited, small shower results in water going over the floor but honestly who cares about that. Would definitely stay again
The location is hard to beat, especially for subway to airport. All staff were really pleasant, but the tiny shower was from hell!
We love the convient location of the Cecil and the old world charm
PERFECT LOCATION
Location is amazing.. couldn't be better Staff is very friendly Room cleaning was good not perfect but it's accepted Breakfast is very limited Overall it was nice experience and maybe i will come to it againe
Passable
Good location but hotel is very dated, needs some repairs, breakfast wasn't great.
Cecil Hotel has an old world feel. Staff are helpful and approachable. It is very central and within walking distance of many attractions and a major metro station. Athinas Street is very authentically Greek and the hotel is surrounded by all kinds of fascinating shops. The breakfast is self service, very basic but available. It can get very busy. A perfect hotel for those who want to enjoy Athens rather than spend a lot of time in their room.
boutique downtown hotel great location small but clean room full free breakfast served in quaint dining room
Downtown Athens Exc location for restaurant ms and shopping down the block from the metro station In the center of everything!
Good location and easy access to metro station and restaurant.
Todo muy bien. No nos gustaron las camas, muy ruidosas sería bueno cambiarlas, y un refrigerador pequeño por cuarto o cada dos cuartos sería mejor, por lo demás excelente.
The hotel is near all the sites, 15-20 minutes walking, parking is a disaster. It’s an older hotel breakfast was fine pretty standard staff was friendly.
Good value within walking distance to main squares and restaurants
Basic but good
The hotel was basic but was clean and forfilled all needs. Fantastic view of the acropolis from rooftop. Good central location and on same road as airport train stop. Reception and check in was not friendly or informative but the other staff inc cleaning ladys were very friendly.
I liked the place and the area. Right in the heart of an old neighborhood and 10-15 minutes from a lot of sites to see. Pretty cool, old style hotel. Lots of local places to eat and shop and generally a great vibe in that part of Athens. Also, really easy to get to from the Metro, maybe 5 minutes walk.
The location of this hotel is very convenient in downtown. 3 min to supermarket. 5 min to metro Monastiraki. Noisy on Saturday night if your room is facing the restaurant when people eating outside table on the street. Rooms on back side are quiet. Staffs are friendly.
Such a fine place to stay at centrally located to every thing
Central convenient value hotel
Great central location. Good basic breakfast included. Helpful staff. Room quite small but was single room, at back of hotel, with opening window. Comfortable bed. Small bathroom. Not luxury but good value and functional
I had a comfortable stay, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is in a good location close to a shopping centre and across the road from a hawker centre. I had a ground floor room with no windows which suited my purpose of a brief stop over where I could get some rest. May not suit everyone. The towels smelled a bit old but the sheets were clean. Good place for a quick stop over.
Great hotel in a fantastic location. I had a room on the rooftop with views to the Acropolis. Great view but wifi not so great up there. There is no kettle in the room but you can use the one in the breakfast room. There are fridges on each level to store your own food/drinks. The benefit of staying in this clean and affordable hotel is the location and proximity to everything. I've already booked to go back so definitely recommend this hotel.
Great location for touring around to all the sites of interest. Felt somewhat cautious about walking around in the evening, and we were warned about pocket picking. Friendly and helpful staff.
It was a very nice place... a great location... simple but good breakfast. And very friendly and helpful staff.
In general it was a great experience... the location could not be better... nice view to the acropolis... the staff very friendly and breakfast simple but good...
The area is a bit sketchy but that's not the hotel's fault. It's very conveniently located between Monastiraki and Omonia... you cannot get better than that! Showers are tight spaces... so if you are on the heavier side... be prepapred! :) Otherwise, great hotel & the old school elevator is a treat!
Fantastic location. Spotless room. Epic breakfast
hotel was located in the centrum. near monastiraki square. it was old building which need renewation. ı was not expecting much from place as ı picked that one to be near centrum.
Very pleasant stay, as always. I will always stay at the Cecil Hotel when I’m in Athens. Great combination of convenience, friendliness and good value.
I’ve stayed at the Cecil Hotel many times over the years. The location can’t be beat, and the staff are always friendly and helpful. The building is well maintained, with plenty of old world charm.
Just a great experience
great location and very friendly front desk, and a good bed. Only negative - sometimes the traffic outside late at night is loud (best to get a room that doesn"t face the street).
Located in the middle of the mainstreet heading toward Monastiraki square. Humble breakfast. A rooftop with view of Acropolis. Very near the Metroline (less 5min walk). Alot of restaurant behind the hotel and the shopping area. Historic site (Hadrian’s Library) is only 5min away. Highly recommended if you are not spending the whole day in the room & wanted to explore all the historic site.
Large rooms, more than I expected!
Good Stay in a No Frills Hotel
I was on vacation in Athens. The hotel was conveniently located to most everything of interest. The staff was friendly and helpful. My room was small but clean and comfortable. No frills. Pretty good breakfast also. My only criticism concerns the small shower without a shower curtain. Unless arising early, there may not be sufficient hot water... only warmish. Not a big enough issue to deter me from staying there again should I return to Athens. When I engage in foreign travel, I prefer well located, older, small, and somewhat idiosyncratic properties, so I enjoyed this stay. If your needs are different, you may be disappointed.
Very good hotel, centrally located
Staff is very friendly, rooms are small but super clean. Location could not be better, you are just minutes walking from acropolis, stigma plaza, parliament, among others. Important to note the subway station is 5 minutes walking and you can catch it from the airport!! The elevator is from the fifties!! See photo!
Not a good choice
This building has a lot of character, it has a good location, steps away from the entrance of the Metro, but thats the only positive. We asked for a room with 2 beds, when we arrived, room was not ready, we arrived early so we assumed that was the reason. They asked us to see the room in the top floor, we went and rushed to say ok -our mistake- after that we realized the room did not have internet, and although open to a shared terrace the room itself have a window with a view to another wall, dark and depressing, the shower had no pressure, and no hot water The next day we asked to be moved to another room, and we were told only one room was available: the room had a decent window, internet service but only 1 queen bed, the washroom was extremely small, a large person will never fit in the shower space! hot water was scarce and when showered the bathroom got wet, because it doesnt have a proper curtain. I frankly think they did not have the 2 bed and thats why they gave us the horrific first room... The breakfast, horrible. No comments. Staff... we only saw 2 guys working in the reception, one of them (the one with no glasses) was very polite and pleasant, helpful and with the typical greek hospitality. The one with glasses, doesnt seem enjoy his job. The women in the breakfast station, very unfriendly, reminded me louise fletcher in someone flew over cockoos nest movie. Im glad we only stay there 4 days and we stayed most of our vacay in other lovely places.
Absolute perfection!
I travel to Greece frequently, so I try a number of hotels in Athens each year. This one exceeded all of my expectations. Very roomy, comfortable and super clean. The front desk was VERY attentive, excellent service! The only (minor) ding was having to share a mini-fridge with the rest of the floor. Under normal circumstances, I would not care, but not an ideal setup for Covid protocols.
It was alright. The rooms are tiny. Very very small. But the place was clean, the staff were kind and its a great location. Breakfast was simple fare
A little noisy, but great location and great staff
You stay here for the location - it's right in the mix of things and a very short walk to the metro: so you can get from the airport to this hotel cheaply and quickly. For a budget traveler who just wants a bed to sleep in, this is a great choice: even better if you're planning to enjoy the local nightlife (as it's pretty loud at night, so if you're a light sleeper who goes to bed early, this isn't a great choice for you). Also, the staff is really good: fastest check-in/check-out I've ever experienced (literally seconds for both), and they were helpful in getting my documents printed late at night.
Toilet was broken but able to flush it they tried to fix it twice it was an old building said had a safe but did not. Breakfast could of been better but rates were low . It was convient to where we needed to be . The beds were hard but did not keep us up-quiet and good value.
Rooms fine, staff nice, awful breakfast.
Everything in room fine and as expected. Clean, comfortable bed and pillows. The balcony option isn't worth the extra though as it's really just a shelf and the entire space is taken up by the aircon unit so not really a balcony at all. I like Cecil and have stayed before and will again. The breakfast however was really bad. I expected it to be simple and limited but the bread was stale, tea was undrinkable and there was no coffee at all. None. The few slices of rubber cheese and dodgy ham along with the stale bread and a few elderly cold eggs was inedible. There was nobody there at all to ask. It had been laid out and left. There really was nothing to eat. However the room was fine and the reception staff are always pleasant and helpful.
Good location, come here since years.
Friendly service, good WIFI and excellent location.
Basic room with tiny bathroom and tinier TV screen; no tea-making facilities in room. Bar - where was it? Roof terrace? Well, there is a roof, from which you can see the Parthenon, but nowhere to sit, let alone a bar - perhaps in the summer? Spiral staircase has only rudimentary banisters and needs care, although there is the alternative of an ancient lift. Buffet breakfast was acceptable. Location excellent, if somewhat noisy.
Inside down town
Best location for sightseeing, super market near, security
Excellent value
Decent hotel. Very central. Room was also fine. Only down side is that the walls are paper thin! But if you have had a good day of sightseeing then it shouldn’t disturb. Breakfast was good and kept me going till 5pm! Excellent value over all.
If you want to see the old city this is the place to be
Super location,5 mins.from metro, excellent rate in view of prime location, breakfast adequate, building old/quaint.
Location close to Monastiraki and the view of the acropolis from the roof are highlights. This is our second stay at The Cecil. We have no complaints! Rooms have been renovated. Our bath had rain or handheld showers. Breakfast buffet has everything: fruits, cereal, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, meats & cheeses, coffee, tea & juice with an assortment of breads, butter & jams.
Location cleanliness and service and great. Breakfast good.
Very well situated near metro, easy to go or come to the aerroport
Central Location but Noisy
Like its central location with decent breakfast. You can walk to Acropolis. This also leads to noisy night from street noise. The room is very small and bare. The bathroom is tiny and shower does not even have a curtain. So the bathroom gets wet after shower no matter how careful you are. Staff is upset and misleading when we change mind from taking taxi to taking shuttle bus to airport for the next day early morning.
The elevator was unique and the staircase spiraled around it.
Very good Location, within walking distance to all shops and restaurants. Unfortunately there is no wifi in Level 4 where our room was located so we had to come to level 3 to get connected to internet. There was no hot water and we asked the front counter in the morning they guy said possibly the boiler was faulty but no appologies ! Overal not very happy, just the good Location.
The breakfast is so poor, should content more variety accordingly with the price of course. The kind of cheese and ham is not good
Excellent for the price
Great value for money!
Affordable. I would recommend to anyone looking for proximity to the heart of old Athens.
The staff were super friendly and accommodating, especially the front desk receptionists
At a good location. Allowed late check in. Staff helped answer our questions.
I'd stay again.
Ok stay. Nothing special.
Great location, close to the central friendly staff
Nice stay at Cecil Hotel
The room was clean and nice. The breakfast was basic, but good enough for one night transit. We liked the location and the old style hotel building.
If you don't expect too much, it's fine.
The Cecil Hotel has small rooms and a laughably small bathroom; you literally cannot go to the bathroom without having your feet in the shower. There is a creaky old elevator, no room in the lobby, and a complementary breakfast that is the same every morning. Still, it's a fine place to stay. The staff were helpful, check-in and check-out were easy. The rooms were clean and well cleaned every day. The location couldn't be better, if you ask me. It's just a block or two away from the central market, and the fine restaurants of the Psyrri neighborhood are just a few minutes away by foot. Our room had a view of the Acropolis (well, if you opened the window and leaned over), and it was both close enough to, and far away from, some of the main city attractions that they were easy to reach, but without some of the noise and traffic. We could walk to the Acropolis and the Acropolis museum, the Archaeology Museum, the Roman complex near Monastiraki, the cathedral, Syntagma Square, and more. If you don't mind the front desk people dressing in T-shirts and smoking, and you are not claustrophobic, I would recommend it.
Comfortable stay, well located and helpful staffs
I stay 2 nights and it was great. Exit via monastraki metro's athinas exit and walk for 5mins. It is easy to find. Staffs are welcoming and checkin was fast. Room is clean. Bathroom is small and obstructed by the door. But it is okay for quick shower. Breakfast was sufficient and delicious. Only small problem is the noise from other guests when they get to their rooms. It has a great top floor for snapping pics of arcopolis. There is also an old style lift for getting to other floors. You could store your lugguge before its time for airport. I enjoy my stay and will be back, if I visit greece.
Good Location. But that's about it. Sadly.
I stayed here for a total of 5 nights in Febuary 2019. Location: Location is good as the Cecil Hotel occupies a beautiful neo-classical building in the heart of old Athens, close to the Ancient Market and the New City Market. Its is smack in the centre between the metro station of Monastiraki and metro station of Omonia. Breakfast: Simple. Very basic. Corn flakes MIXED with coco crunch in the same dispenser(how lazy can one get ?!), hardboiled eggs, cake, ham and cheese slices, greek yogurt, bread and apple. The staff: Breakfast staff doubles as the chambermaid too. Don't expect any hello or "good morning" at breakfast from her or anyone hotel guest at breakfast for that matter in Greece, unlike the rest of Europe. You cant but feel that this hotel has much potential but they dont care or is just lazy. The staircase walls could use with a good coat of fresh paint to accentuate the very beautiful spiral staircase. The dead lightbulbs in the lobby needs replacing. The wobbly tables in the breakfast room have folded paper underneathe the legs to keep the table steady. The shower stand in my bathroom is broken so I have to hold the shower head and bodysoap at the same time when I soap my body in that already very small shower area and trying hard not to wet the bathroom floor at the same time. Would I stay here again ? Probably not, as I think I would try other hotels in the area.
Good Location. But that's about it. Sadly.

exelent
it was good
Great value with excellent location
I was really close to all the main tourist attractions
Excellent location and good price. No luxury.
A very convenient location. The hotel is basic but clean and has all what I need.
Simple hotel in good location. So close to restaurants and markets, metro stations and Athens attractions. Very nice view for Acropolis from the roof. Simple breakfast. In essential big plus is very helpful personnel.
You get what you pay for
Location is very good. Breakfast is buffet, nothing special. Water pressure in the shower is bad and no shower pole. Shower plate overflowing everytime getting the bathroom floor all wet. Hairdryer only worked on the low setting, overheating in the high one. All three bulbs from the ceiling lamp not working. Just a bit noisy as the room was next to the main road.
Very good location close to Monistiraki station and sights
Perfect location. Very helpful and welcoming .
Very helpful and welcoming. perfect location. Clean. Nice breakfast.
I absolutely loved this hotel. The location was amazing and we walked everywhere besides the airport (lol). We were extremely comfortable at this site and the room was always clean upon our return. It was quiet and we enjoyed every night
The location to acropolis was great. very friendly staff
Good thing was it was close to everything. That’s the only thing we liked. Wifi was terrible. Not very friendly.
Lovely hotel that feels very honey with a nice old-world feel. The staff are all great. The breakfast is basic, but it’s exactly what I need. I’ve stayed many times and will of course stay here again anytime I’m in Athens.
