the property was amazing, the gardens were just beautiful, the back of our cabin was like being in the middle of the rain forest. the best part was that we could walk to the river and enjoy a little swim.
Grounds were amazing. Very friendly staff. Definitely will recommend and stay on our next visit thru Fortuna.
The family that tends to the cabin was so kind. It is very helpful to speak a bit of Spanish, but they do they’re best if you don’t. There was a nice breakfast for $5/person that we enjoyed while watching the many birds out front at the reception area, and having a completely private cabin with a back porch overlooking the garden was very nice.
good value, sweet family run business
This was a sweet place out of the main Fortuna area, but still quite close. My only complaint was we expected at least one stove burner for a little cooking. The people are super-sweet. Breakfast was adequate. Nice gardens and walk down to the river. Quiet.
Great little place to stay. The setting is very beautiful and it feels remote even though this is quite close to La Fortuna town, La Fortuna waterfall and Cerro Chato. The breakfast at the Cabina was also a great example of a typical breakfast. Highly recommended!
Beautiful location close to the river. Clean, quiet. Big cabins great for families. Hosts were very nice and helpful.
Very quiet, confortable, beautiful landscape y very good breakfast
These little cabins were very clean, some newly renovated. Amenities were a little lacking, like there was no safe or AC, however there was a refrigerator, a kitchenette as well as a porch overlooking the river with a hammock. table and chairs to enjoy the afternoon. Breakfast was supplied for an additional $5 per person that was homemade and delicious. Our host was also a bit of a bird whisperer, having made friends with a local humming bird that felt comfortable enough to land on his hand. All-in-all, it was a nice place to stay, near the volcanic area and reasonable in price.
Very rustic with large gaps under main doors so lots of bugs and gecko
Great location and beautiful environment
My family (two adults and 2 teenagers) had a nice stay at Cabinas La Catarata. The cabin has a balcony with a great view of the river and the surrounding forest. Tranquil environment!
Spacious cabin with great service. Owner was very nice and helpful, felt at home! Very clean and the family loved it.
Wonderful bird-watching!
Toucans and parrots and many other birds appeared on the trees viewed from the kitchenette/balcony. The sounds from the trees and the cataracts below were very refreshing. We could experience the outdoors even on the day it was raining.
Fantastic Little Cabins!
Really fantastic little cabins! An amazing value. Rustic with modern bathroom and some appliances. Excellent hosts. Helpful and efficient. Loved the cabins and the scenery, flora, birds, environment completely enchanting :) It does help to speak a little Spanish, but not necessary.
Comforts of being at home in the jungle
A beautiful surrounding and peaceful sleep with only the rush of the river in the background. Close to town, but far enough from the hustle and bustle. Friendly and eager to please family run accommodation. The breakfast is a great deal with beautiful bird feeding as your morning entertainment. I can't say enough about how we loved our stay and would come back anytime. As well as recommend this to our friends.
Decent location, good pool
The pool and the free breakfast were probably the best parts out of our stay, the restaurant workers spoke a little English but not much. We went to the restaurant for supper, their chef is originally from Italy and hand cut the pasta noddles. The casino part of the hotel is under renovations and their gym is a little old/rusty but I was still able to get a good workout in there. If we ever travel back to Liberia, we will definitely stay here again.
+ The family running the place is so friendly and accommodating. They have a large grassy area where kids can play, and they have a little trail on their property. My children enjoyed picking fruit from their trees and watching the birds all around the property. - The room could use some updating, and it wasn‘t as clean as we would have liked. WiFi was spotty.
Fortuna
The owners of the property we wonderful. Check in and out was a breeze with no surprises. The owner put of bananas and fruit the entire time to attract the amazing bird life. Recommended good local restaurant in Fortuna that we enjoyed.
Good location for all La Fortuna activities.
Great family running the place that is very willing to help. Breakfast makes you feel at home. Cabins don't have A/C but they cool off in the evenings quick. Stay here if you don't want the spa package and swim up pool but are more interested in local flavor and activities around Arenal.
Beautiful location right next to the river
Our stay here was exactly what we wanted - very friendly staff, very clean and spacious rooms, and only the sounds of the river and wildlife. The hammock on the balcony overlooking the river was the perfect spot to relax.
Our cabin smelt like urine.
La Fortuna is overpriced so its good value if you are OK with a rustic setting (lots of bugs). Smelt of urine from bathroom. Was clean but probably needed repairs/ renos in bathroom. Kitchen lacked ...no stove top. Had a great balcony.
Excellent place!
Customer service was absolutely excellent. This is privately owned and the owners live on the premises. The elderly lady and man both song speak English so it makes it hard to communicate if you don't know Spanish, but they both are wonderful and friendly and do the best to help you with your needs. Their adult son knows excellent English and he is extremely helpful and nice. They truly make you feel safe and comfortable. I was a fiest time solo traveller and felt totally safe here. The son even took me to town a few times which was very nice. For the price this place is excellent. It's far enough from town to feel secluded and truly on Vacation but close enough to get to town for food and groceries. The grounds are beautiful and well kept with beautiful scenery of Arenal Volcano and a river near by. I hardly seen any of the other guest and the place is quiet. The room is basic but has everything you need. Just be warned the rooms are warm and there's no A.C. just a fan that to me didn't work well, but I was gone all day anyways so it didn't matter to me or bother me, it was cool enough at night to sleep comfortably. The was enough outlets to charge all my devices as well. They cleaned the room everyday and gave new towels everyday. I'd definitely return here for a future trip.
Great Lodge, great stay!
We had booked to 2 rooms (as offered on Hotel.com website) for 3 people, but when we arrived we realized that 'room' actually meant 'cabin' and that one cabin would be perfect for the 3 of us; the owner was very helpful and immediately agreed that we could only rent one cabin; this was successfully confirmed with Hotel.com. The owners of this property were very helpful, very accommodation and the cabin was great. Excellent breakfast on the outdoor patio. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at La Catarata as it was also very close to the centre of La Fortuna. I can strongly recommend this lodge and we all would definitely stay there again given the opportunity.
On the way to La Fortuna falls
Lovely clean 2 bedroom cabin with a balcony overlooking the jungle you will fall asleep to the sound of the flowing river. There is a fridge but no hot plate, electric griddle and coffee maker. Lovely staff.
very satisfied
Lorenzo, the owner was very accommodating and gave us a bigger place than what had reserved for our family of 6. Nice tall ceilings and 2 baths in a rustic but roomy cabin. hammocks outside, little kitchen, this place is close to the famous waterfall and to me is much better than a regular hotel. Breakfast is served for a small fee, very complete but the same every morning. Some toucans came to roost one morning and Lorenzo came quickly to tell us they were there as he knew we were interested in such things. Good place and good price. You won't be disappointed.
Quiet setting
Beautiful quiet setting. Seemed personable. Chocolate plantation across the street which was fun. Great location.
Beautiful cabins in the middle of the rainforest
Upon arriving, I was a little hesitant - this place is a little more remote than I originally thought. I checked in with Felix easily (although he spoke very little English), and he showed me to my cabin. It was clean and more than spacious enough for one or even two. Unfortunately, since it's located in the middle of the forest, it isn't completely sealed off from bugs, but Felix took care of my issues promptly. The breakfast in the morning was an amazing - both the food and experience on the porch. I would definitely come back here for future travels. Can't beat the price of the environment.
Awesome cabins!
We ended up staying in two different cabins while here, as we wanted to extend our stay. Both cabins were great. One had its own private porch in front of a field that our kids played soccer in. The other had a porch with a hammock overlooking the river/jungle/ravine. Both felt very private. If we go back to la fortuna this is the only place we would stay at.
Good and affordable place to stay in location.
Nice staff and good location, affordable compared to many others in same location, and in my opinion perfect since you should be out and about enjoying the outside activities.
Family Visit to Cabinas La Catarata
We visited the hot springs at Tabacon with our family. We stayed overnight at Cabinas La Catarata, which was perfect for us. Wonderful people ran the cabins, very accommodating. Nice clean and spacious cabin. Good hearty breakfast. We will go back.
Cute cabins with volcano view
The cabins are lovely and have a great view of the Arenal volcano. Breakfast was good and reasonably priced. Staff all very friendly and helpful. The river at the bottom of the grounds is great to cool off in, and the La Fortuna waterfall was an easy hike away. Also hugely recommend the chocolate tour just across the road. Small problems that would be very easy to fix; Only one hammock and one very uncomfortable bench on the balcony, meant that only one of us could relax there at a time. Also, though it was nice to have a kitchen, it needs to be WAY better equipped.
Enjoyed our stay!
Family-run business, was a nice (and cheaper) alternative to the Holiday Inn scene a mile or so outside La Fortuna town center. Cabin was great value and exceeded expectations - very roomy, basic kitchen (no stove, but has fridge and can make due with electric frying pan and coffee maker), comfy hammock on back porch. No AC, no screens on windows (but neither were needed). Never turned on the tv. Felix (owner) speaks very little English, but is very sweet and helpful. Makes a delicious Costa Rican breakfast. Son, Gabriel, speaks better English and was exceedingly nice and helpful, even serving as driver for my family on last day, allowing us to see much more than we would have otherwise. Grounds has beautiful garden, Felix feeds the birds and showed us a small red tree frog one morning (very difficult to spot otherwise). Woke up to a flock of parrots chattering outside our window one morning. Enjoyed our stay and would happily stay hear again. Need to use taxis or rent a car if you stay here, but taxis are cheap.
Homely
It was a very nice stay and hosts are very warm and welcoming. Pros:- 1) welcoming host (they provided us with some free food and gave us ride till downtown) 2) nice breakfast 3) you can see lot of birds around 4) It is at walking distance to the la fortuna waterfall and not very far off from downtown Cons- 1) bathroom is a bit smaller in size 2) wifi is a bit slow
Helpful owners and good accomodations.
We spent four nights at Cabinas La Catarata. The son in the family that owns the place speaks good English and was very helpful when we had a problem involving the transportation to the airport we had previously arranged; he let us use his phone and computer. The cabin had a nice balcony facing lush vegetation. We enjoyed watching the birds. There were also a lot of birds to see at breakfast, which we ate at outdoor tables near the office. Note that it is about a 30-minute walk into La Fortuna. The hotel's surroundings are relatively quiet.
Budget Cabins for a great stay in the Jungle
Stayed for three days at Cabinas La Catarata and very much enjoyed it. The cabin was simple but perfect for our stay. There were two bedrooms each with a double and single matress and a bigger living space with a kitchenette, tv, table, chairs and couch. Everything was very clean. The highlight of the room was the hammock on the back porch that we could swing in and just listen and watch the jungle. Relaxing at night as the air temp cooled down. Drawback of the room, was that it did not have AC. It did have two fans that worked well to keep us cool. The cabins are named for the waterfall up the road. Definitely check it out. Beatiful waterfall that has some refreshing swimming in the river below. Wifi was terribly slow
Very basic but that is what we were looking for. We had a two bedroom cabin for a family of 4 adults. Breakfast was included and was very good. Would stay there again if in the area.
Excellent bird watching with a friendly staff
Bird watching from your balcony is almost as good anywhere in Costa Rica. The only better place is from the breakfast table. The staff was super friendly and very helpful. My only complaint would be that each cabin has only one fan, even though it has two bedrooms. Felix was an excellent resource.
Lovely setting
We were welcomed by the owner's son. Very pleasant and friendly. The cabins are spacious and in lovely surroundings but simple and sparse made out of wood. Perfect for backpackers and those looking for somewhere of good value to just sleep. However we shared the room with a rat, (and found droppings on the beam above kitchen) there were cobwebs all around the wooden walls by the bed, the toothbrush holder looked like it had not been cleaned for some time and there was a mouldy knife in the cutlery tray which had a lid on. These last two things left me feeling the place was not really clean and so I felt uncomfortable there despite the lovely setting and kind owners. A little attention to detail would make a big difference.
Family Adventure
We stayed at cabins for a family vacation. We found the owners to be delightful. The river, the sounds of frogs, the drum of rain, it was what we had looked forward to. We especially enjoyed being able to book tours through the front desk, learn about the wildlife on site including a visting boa, and the daily breakfast. We also highly recommend the rainforest chocolate tour that is across the street.
Loved it and would stay there again in a heartbeat
We stayed here for 3 nights and was our first part of our trip to Costa Rica. The cabin we stayed in was absolutely beautiful. It had 3 bedrooms, two full baths, a bunch of windows that opened right up so the house could be open air all day. The deck was huge and had lots of chairs, tables and a hammock swing. The property was just outside of La Fortuna which i liked because it was more clean and fresh but if you wanted to go into town or the hot springs it was just a short taxi ride. The owners of this hotel are sooo sweet, it's family run and they were very, accomodating for anything we needed. Breakfast was included in our package and it was lovely. The first morning they brought out orange juice, coffee and a fruit plate. I assumed this was the breakfast, then he returns with eggs, cheese, gallo pinto, meat and toast with homemade jam. We were all very impressed with everything about Cabinas la catarata and would definitely stay again. Thanks!!
The owners were very nice and friendly. The cabins are in a great location - close to town but far enough out to see some interesting birds and wildlife.
Nice stay
Very nice people and place
It was very hard to find the hotel but worth it once you get there! Great location! Near town, restaurants, bars, canopy, hot springs and volcano.
Little gem!
It was so nice! Very clean and We everything you need! Breakfast was wonderful with over 50 birds singing around you! Can't wait to go back!
Cabins In The Jungle
We were here for three nights and loved it. The cabins are rustic but very cute and comfy. We traveled to the Tabacon Hot Springs (not the resort) and soaked in the river and took in the beauty of the area. The owner of Cabinas La Catarata feeds the local birds right beside the breakfast area so we got to see many up-close-and-personal. There is a little humming bird that they feed and comes and demands attention at will. We weren't able to see that Arenal Volcano, as it was under cloud cover, and talked to many others who said the same thing.
Enjoy La Fortuna in a cabin surrounded by wildlife
Stayed here for a few days and really enjoyed it. Good, big breakfast while watching a variety of birds is the highlight and the main reason for staying here. On a good day you'll see tanagers, toucans, hummingbirds, euphonia, honeycreepers, chachalaca, and parakeets. We had a rental car so the location was actually perfect, close enough to town to get there in 5 minutes, far enough away to enjoy a quiet night's rest. No wifi in your cabin unless it is near the reception office, also the wifi suddenly went out quite often which is frustrating when you are fine tuning your daily route. We enjoyed our time here and we would stay here again without hesitation. PROS: -Quite, not in town -Wildlife, mostly birds -Big breakfast -Spacious cabins CONS: -Spotty wifi -Rustic cabin, Small animals can/will enter cabin (This could actually be on the "Pro" list if you don't mind.
