Just an overnight...

A little hard to find as 161 is not the street number (it is #43 I think) in a very narrow alley but great location and very friendly, knowledgeable staff. Honey wanted to see some live music and they recommended School which was fun! Breakfast was just OK but overall was enjoyable and wish we could have stayed longer.

Clean, homey hotel with great location

Amazing!! The room was super clean and you could tell they put effort into the bathrooms (really comfortable showers) Location: It’s very homey in the middle of the hutongs and very quiet at night. There’s a couple hidden restaurant gems in the hutong too. Once you step out onto the main street there’s a bunch of shops. Once you’re out onto the main street it’s about 10 minutes to the subway, and right next to the bus stop. Plus it’s next to subway line 5 which takes you to most attractions in the city. Extra: the folks in the front are super friendly and helpful and speak great English. If you’re looking for a place to stay in city center, this is pretty solid. Great location and comfy, clean stay.

I am giving 161 Lama Temple Courtyard Hotel 5 stars - and I didn’t even stay there. How can that be, you might ask? I had a hotel reservation, but when I arrived they told me there was a problem with my room (a plumbing problem and the plumber worked all night but was unable to fix it in time). So here’s what 161 Lama Temple did for me... 1. Got a room for me at a nearby alternate hotel. 2. They carried my bags to the alternate hotel (which was pretty nice). The price of the alternate hotel was lower so they paid me the difference in cash! 3. They offered me free beer. 4. They made me an excellent custom breakfast the following morning. 5. The entire staff was very friendly and made me feel I was the most important person in Beijing. In summary, if you are lucky enough to get a room at 161 Lama Temple Courtyard Hotel, you’d be crazy not to stay there. BTW, the hotel is in a hutong and doesn’t look like much from the outside... but once inside you’ll see why it’s a ‘courtyard hotel’. If and when I travel again to Beijing, I am definitely staying at 161 Lama Temple Courtyard Hotel.

Staff is so friendly. They make everything for you to have a nice stay. Good spot. Breakfast is good and plenty. Good coffee! Beers in the fridge. Comfy beds and nice room. Subway is a must so using a pass is worth it if you stay more than 4 days. Distances between 2 subway stations can be very long 2-3km. So more than sometimes, walking is not an option. The place offers Great Wall tour (small group) to a less touristic and crowded part of the Wall. It was good enough for me. They offer other tours too. I recommand this place.

The staff here really is fantastic. The hotel itself looks as advertised - a more traditional little hotel on a side street (hutong) in Beijing. It's a nice and easy place to use as a home base for exploring a cool city (convenient location and close to the subway, not to mention fun things and good places to eat nearby). The rooms are kept very clean and you can order small meals or coffee in the hotel lobby if you want. The gem really is the staff though - EXTREMELY nice, helpful, eager to help, and they all speak English.

Most amazing hotel and service...cheap too!

ABSOLUTELY AMAAAAAZZZIIINNNGGG!!! rooms were great...beds are kinda harder....more than American ones but not any more than most of Asia. Spacious....usually not the case in Asia....and the front desk gals were incredibly friendly and helpful. They helped us buy train tix to Xi'an....which was proving to be more difficult than I would have imagined....would walk us to the main street to catch taxi they would call to make sure we found the right taxi and they would make sure driver knew where to go. Took the mutianyu great wall trip thru them and they walked us to the tour bus. They go way out of their way to help. Give you water everyday in your room. Area is good. Near restaurants and an amazing vegetarian one called Baihe'ai (sp?) they can help you find it. Hotel just about an American block from subway and Lama Temple (good landmark when going by taxi because hotel is down an alert in hiring so taxis have some trouble finding). Have fun and tell him to Simone and the other gals!! Pics are... Hotel room, Lama Temple and some food from vegetarian place mentioned.

Excellent staff and authentic experience!

We loved Lama Temple! It is a blend of hotel-bed&breakfast-and-hostel feeling! My 29-year-old daughter enjoyed Beijing thanks to Lama Temple accommodations and incredibly helpful staff. We stayed in a 5 star hotel in Xian and we did not get even the 1% of the excellent language and service support we got from Lama Temple Courtyard! The room was exquisitely furnished in authentic Chinese style furniture. They have a roof courtyard where my daughter did her yoga in the morning. Their lobby has ambience music and tons of books to browse in their comfy sofas. They offered a western style breakfast served till noon, but the government shut down the food offering part of the hotel - hopefully this will be resolved soon and the impressive coffee-expresso-capuccino machine will make its way back to grace the lobby!! It was our first-hand witnessing of how hard thriving small businesses in China survive. Hutongs are surviving in a very creative and positive manner and should be celebrated!!!

didnt enjoy my stay here

A popular budget hotel in the hutongs. Room was quite dark as it's in an alley way, however this meant that it keeps cool. The a/c and wifi were both good. Room was small and the double bed was in a space which didn't allow access from the sides. It's was necessary to climb in and out from the bottom. The bedding was clean and extra pillows were provided on request. The mattress was very hard as I suspect it was placed directly into a wooden board. Unfortunately there was mould in the corners and by the door indicating that the room needs to be refurbished. The bathroom was adequate but be aware that the plumbing doesn't allow for paper to be flushed down the loo. It has to be dropped into a waste basket instead. Breakfast, drinks and other meals are served in the small cosy reception area. There is also a small first floor patio area. In summary, this is a modest hotel in the heart of old Beijing. On retrospect I would have preferred to have stayed in a 'western style ' hotel when recuperating from a day's site seeing in the hustle and bustle of Beijing

We had a fantastic 4 night stay...we had a triple room and very spacious and clean. The hotel was off a side road...but don't be put off. It was very safe in the area! The restaurant opposite was fab...we ordered leg of mutton for 3 of us and we bbq over an open table fire! The staff were very friendly and spoke very good english. We booked our Great Wall trip via them and it was superb! They also recommended me a local massage place and it was amazing! Near a MTR (about 5 mins walk) and lots of good restaurants, bars and cake shops at an affordable price. I would highly reccomend this hotel if you are looking for a taste of Beijing!!!

Building Site outside

Booked a King size room, but was put in a twin single for the first night. Not a major inconvenience, but being positioned underneath the stairs and next to reception, it was quite noisy. The hotel itself is pleasant enough and has nice character, the staff were very good, but the walls are very thin and the hardwood floors mean that every step in the above and adjoining rooms can be heard. APRIL 2017 - The hutong outside is undergoing renovation along the entire length and can only be described as a building site. Piles of rubble line the narrow street and with traffic in both directions it can be quite dangerous and very dusty, so I'd suggest giving it a miss until the end of May or possibly later.

Good location but hard to find it is in an alley

The front desk is very helpful because language is a big barrier. The rooms were spotless and the beds were comfortable. The morning breakfast (not included) was very good. To get there you have to walk through an ugly alley but it is safe, just lots of construction. Taxis not too helpful from train station and better to call the hotel and ask them to tell taxi how to find it, a representative from hotel will stand in street with your name. Becarefull with taxi drivers avoid paying 100yueng as they may switch it to counterfeit. ATM is right at corner and a great restaurant called UMAMI HOT POT..the staff was fabulous as the food. Worth the Hutong experience

Front lobby is cute has some seats and chair to Lounge in or to order food and drinks, got greeted check in was fast. There is only 11 rooms here. Stayed in the bird nest & water cube room. Room is a nice smaller size. Hutong style which is what we expected. Bed is comfy soft enough. Washroom was fine everything worked. Only thing is not much space for heavy packers to place anywhere. Had a side chair/bed where you can have tea which is provided, can be used as a actual bed. No fridge in room but daily bottles of water is given. We had breakfast here which was decent price is comparable to home. The staff is very nice helpful and speaks English well enough. Wifi works. Tv we didn't have luck with English channels. They are doing construction during the day so the only down fall is you can smell odours especially cigarettes into your room. Out in the alley to the left when leaving there is small restaurants, fruits and vegetables stands even raw meat. At the end of the alley to the right there is a bank which does exchange currency. Lama Temple is a short walk from there. And a subway station. To the right there are many places to eat random shops and another subway station as well as ghost street which is full of Chinese restaurants. Special thanks to Angel for making our stay memorable. She was always so helpful at the front desk with any questions we had.

Great clean place at a touristy location

Overall, I would definitely stay again. :) Staff are great - courteous and friendly, place is clean and well decorated. The little patio area on the second floor is nice, as is the little koi pond in the corner. There's a cafe at the front of the hotel, which seems convenient (though I never got anything). They provide two complimentary bottles of water each day. Located ~10 minute walk from subway station for easy access and from ghost street for night food adventures. In the opposite direction, 10 min walk will get you to the lama temple and Confucius temple. It's located quite a bit in a hutong (alley-like street), but the road there is lit with food shops. Not sure how English friendly they are since I speak some Chinese, but I saw a lot of foreigners in the area, so I'd assume the whole area is tourist friendly.

Five stars for the staff!

The young, go-getting staff of this fun, quaint hotel is the number one reason to stay at 161 Lama Temple. They are knowledgeable, speak very good English and always ready to give travel tips when needed. I recommend booking the Mutainyu Great Wall tour with them also, and they will hook you up with another fabulous tour guide for a worthwhile walk and look at the wall complete with lunch. The neighborhood outside the hotel can be dreary and dusty by day, but at night comes alive with tables set outside on a summer night with grilled fare, beer and lively groups.

We stayed at 161 lama temple at the end of lantern festival this last year. The room quality and condition, particularly considering that the area around lama temple is a great one to stay in, was fantastic. Super nice hotel staff. The only knock for some is that the hotel is a bit tough to find because it's in a hutong. But seeing that hutongs are an essential feature of old Beijing and that staying in a hutong feels really neat, I don't think it's a problem. Just get a good map or download a goop map before you go. Some cab drivers will drive you there, others won't because the hutongs are so narrow.

Lodging highlight of the trip!!

A very unique hotel in a non-touristy area of town. The hotel staff was very helpful and friendly. The restaurant/bar was reasonably priced and the food was absolutely excellent. The room we stayed in wasn't extremely large but the bathroom was very nice with new, modern features and a great shower. There are interesting and unique local food options in this neighborhood. We stayed at two large hotels in Hong Kong and Shanghai but this was way more charming and personable. As the title would indicate, Lama Temple is nearby and was fascinating to visit.

When I asked them if they could help me learn how to make chinese dumplings in a class, they offered instead to teach me themselves and I and another guest had a wonderful time making dumplings and sharing them with all the staff ( plus a little boy who dropped in)..I highly recommend this hotel !

Charming old style

Room is attractive and comfy although simple. The lobby is charming, as are the courtyards and flowers. But no window screens and no TV in English. Adding a bar of soap and luggage stand would be nice. The street it's on is dark and dirty, but didn't feel unsafe. I like the Lama Temple area. Sweet helpful staff. Poor Internet but that may be Beijing.

Rigtig godt valg
